HARRISBURG – Gov. Tom Corbett joined PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch, members of the state Senate and House of Representatives and other officials last night to discuss the final affirmative vote on an historic comprehensive transportation plan — the most comprehensive piece of state transportation legislation — in decades.
The final House vote sends to the governor’s desk a plan to keep Pennsylvania safe and economically competitive by investing an additional $2.3 – $2.4 billion by the fifth year of the plan.
“Today is a landmark day for Pennsylvania. This bold transportation plan demonstrates that our elected officials are serious about keeping our residents safe and our economy strong,” Corbett said. “The lawmakers who voted for this legislation have said, ‘yes’ to our state’s future and I thank each lawmaker whose yes vote will keep Pennsylvania moving.”
By the fifth year of the plan, this legislation invests an additional:
- $1.3 billion annually for state roads and bridges;
- $480 million – $495 million annually for public transportation;
- $237 million annually for local roads and bridges;
- $144 million annually in a multi-modal fund;
- $30 million annually for dirt, gravel and low-volume roadways; and
- $86 million annually for Pennsylvania Turnpike expansion projects.
“Governor Corbett’s unwavering leadership has solved a decades-old problem that he inherited,” Schoch said. “A true leader makes the tough decisions and tonight, Pennsylvanians can be proud of the fact that they have a governor who does not back down from challenges.”
Corbett is expected to sign the legislation into law sometime next week.
