House leaders back Obama plan for Syria strike

Washington, DC, United States (4E) – Republican and Democratic leaders in the House of Representatives have thrown their support to President Barack Obama’s military response to alleged gassing of civilians by forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced their position to Obama’s plan to degrade Assad’s capabilities and upgrade that of the Syrian opposition’s after meeting the president at the White House on Tuesday.
CNN: Ariel Castro Found Hanged in Prison Cell
Ariel Castro, who was sentenced to life plus 1,000 years for kidnapping, raping and holding captive three women, was found hanging in his prison cell Tuesday night, according to CNN.
Officials found Castro, 52, hanging in his cell at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, Ohio, at about 9:20 p.m., the state’s Department of Corrections said.
Bank of America raises $1.47B from the sale of China Construction Bank shares

New York, NY, United States (4E) – Bank of America Corp. will cap its eight-year investment in China Construction Bank Corp. (CCB) by raising $1.47bn from the sale of its remaining stake in the Chinese bank.
Bank of America sold 2 billion of its shares in CCB, which represent one percent of the Chinese lender’s stock, according to the Charlotte, North Carolina-based lender’s statement released Tuesday. The $750mn pretax profit from the open market selling of the shares will appear in the third-quarter results and could be lowered due to accounting adjustments, according to Bank of America.
Fire Causes $350,000 Worth of Damage to Kersey Motor Company
KERSEY – A fire caused $350,000 worth of damage to the Kersey Motor Company, located at 108 Zola St., at 5:36 p.m. Tuesday in Fox Township. The fire has been ruled accidental in nature, reported the state police at Ridgway.
LT Supers to Advertise for Replacement Fire Engine
CLEARFIELD – The Lawrence Township Supervisors approved to advertise the specifications for a fire engine to replace its Station No. 1 engine for bid.
The specifications from the fire company were approved with minor changes, including the size of pump and the brand of tires. Station No. 1’s engine had been out of service for several weeks.

HARRISBURG – Pennsylvania’s attorney general is giving lawyers for Gov. Tom Corbett written legal authority to handle a case in which the Health Department wants to stop a clerk from giving marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
Clearfield Commissioners Approve CDBG Funding Application
CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield County Commissioners approved the 2013 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding application with a modification to an allocation from last year during Tuesday’s workshop meeting.
This year the county received $242,640 from the state. The county’s Planning Director Jodi Brennan recommended allocating $100,000 to both the Houtzdale Municipal Authority (HMA) and to the Woodward Township Sewage and Water Authority (WTSWA). She also recommended juggling last year’s $100,000 allocation for the WTSWA project, which isn’t “ready to go,” to the Curwensville Municipal Authority (CMA).
Senate Panel Okays Obama Resolution for Syria Strike

Washington, DC, United States (4E) – The Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved Wednesday a redrafted resolution authorizing the president to launch a military strike on Syria aimed specifically at preventing regime forces from using chemical weapons and supporting rebels.
The approval by 10-7 vote sends the resolution to the Senate floor for voting. Seven Democrats and three Republicans voted “yes” to the measure while five Republicans and two Democrats voted “no.” A separate House version is also under consideration.
Michael Gets Prison for Bank Fraud; Kephart’s Sentencing Gets Continued
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Mark Michael, 55, of Clearfield and the chief financial officer of Dart Trucking, was sentenced today to 2.5 years in prison by U.S. District Judge Dan Aaron Polster in relation to a $3.6 million check-kiting scheme against Huntington Bank, according to Michael Tobin, public information officer for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio.
However, the sentencing was continued for Timothy Kephart, 54, of Morrisdale and the chief executive officer of Dart Trucking, said Tobin. He didn’t indicate as to when Kephart would appear for sentencing in relation to the case. Michael and Kephart were both found guilty of one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud and one count of bank fraud in June.
Hearing Continued in Aggravated Assault Case
CLEARFIELD – The preliminary hearing for a man accused of assaulting a state constable was continued until 9:30 a.m. Sept. 11 by Magisterial District Judge Jerome Nevling during Centralized Court on Wednesday at the Clearfield County Jail.
Rusty Alan Maines, 48, of Lanse has been charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, harassment and criminal mischief. His bail was set at 50,000 monetary, which he’s posted.
