Gretchen Carr, 76, of Morrisdale flew from this earth on Saturday, July 13, 2013 while surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of Samuel F. Carr.
She was the youngest of six children who were born to the late Louis and Florence (Way) Hauck of Curwensville. She was born Jan. 13, 1937 in a humble and honorable farmhouse and now lives in a place with her Heavenly Father.
Mrs. Carr encapsulated the definition of Christianity. She was a devout friend to all and compassionate and giving. She was an avid reader, enjoyed to crochet, absolutely reveling her “Words with Friends,” tried to never miss watching Jeopardy and strongly opined politics. Constantly challenged by Bridge, Mrs. Carr studied and practiced consistently on her iPad until her eyes couldn’t any longer support her passion for reading and word games.
At an early time in her marriage, she desired to pursue college and was accepted as a part-time student. Her interest continued as the family moved from one place to another. In the spring of 1983, or 14 years after starting, she was awarded her degree at Penn State’s Allentown campus.
Mrs. Carr traveled with her husband on many of his business trips throughout the United States. She also went on International trips, such as Australia, China, Japan, Mexico and Spain. Mrs. Carr was always very interested in customs and lifestyles wherever she was visiting.
Above all else on earth, her conditional love and devotion was first and foremost for her family, her husband and their children, Roxie (Steve Watters) of Powell, OH; Kevin (Tracy Mayhew) of Norfolk, VA and Teresa (Carmelo Perrote) of Laguna Duero, Spain. Her eyes sparkled for her grandchildren, Laura, Javier and Anabel, and they danced for joy when in the company of her great-grandson, Stanley.
She’s been reunited with her brothers, Dean and Henry and her sister, Louise. She’s survived by her brothers, Fred and Earnest.
Mrs. Carr battled both breast and ovarian cancers at different times in her life. She was brave, forward-thinking, stubborn and committed to the fight. In lieu of flowers, please honor her with memorial donations to the American Cancer Society, Clearfield Hospital Hospice or the Ohio Health Hospice of Delaware County, OH.
Her life will be remembered at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Gethsemane United Methodist Church, Allport. The Rev. Heather Baker-McAllister and the Rev. Robert Ludrowsky will be officiating.
Burial will be in the Palestine United Methodist Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Friday and again from 10 a.m. until the hour of services Saturday at the church.
The Strange & Weaver Funeral Home, Morrisdale, is serving the family.
