DUBOIS – The DuBois Lady Beavers coupled quickness with scrappy play Friday night to upend the visiting Clearfield Lady Bisons basketball team58-51 in District 9 league action.
Clearfield had a definite height advantage but couldn’t maintain a five point third quarter lead as the Lady Beavers took their 2009-10 season record to 6-4. With the defeat the Lady Bisons saw their three game winning streak halted and are now 6-2 on the year.
Early on in the first period DuBois jumped out to an 11-4 lead before the Bisons closed out the first eight minutes with a 4-0 run to cut the margin to 11-8 after one.
Seniors Amber Byerly and Gwenn Porter pushed the Bisons out in front 25-23 as the first half ended. Sopic had six in the second stanza while Porter netted five. All six points by Byerly were on free throws.
As Clearfield utilized their height benefit they jumped their margin to 28-23 early in the third quarter. It would be the last lead for the Lady Bisons though as the relentless hustle by DuBois saw the Lady Beavers tie the game at 31 before going out in front for good, 34-31, thanks to a three pointer by Carly Wallock at the 3:40 mark of the third.
Clearfield would get to within a bucket or two the rest of the way but the Beavers usually had an answer to stop an overtaking run by the Lady Bisons.
DuBois outscored the Lady Bisons 35-26 in the final sixteen minutes and hit six of eight free throws in the final quarter to secure the victory.
Porter and Byerly, thanks to aggressively taking the ball to the basket, each had sixteen points to carry Clearfield. Madison Sopic also had a nice game by scoring 11.
Wallock, who connected on three from long distance, paced DuBois with sixteen followed by fifteen from Kirsten Wilcox.
The junior varsity contest was a low scoring affair as DuBois bested the Lady Bison underclassmen 24-20.
Next week is a huge week for the Lady Bisons as on Monday they travel to Johnsonburg; they are home Wednesday against Elk County Catholic and then journey to St. Marys on Friday.
