BELLWOOD — Clearfield couldn’t take advantage of 11 free passes and lost 6-3 to Altoona in a Central Penn American Legion League game shortened to 4½ innings because of rain at Drost Field Tuesday evening.
Thomas Summers’ two-out single in the first inning was the lone hit for Clearfield.
Cole Kephart walked and scored on a wild pitch for a brief 1-0 lead in the second frame, and five walks gave the Chiefs two runs in the fifth.
Three free passes by winner Derek Cursio loaded the bases, and reliever John McGinley walked Cole Kephart and Kyler Kephart to force in the runs before getting the last two outs for a save.
Clearfield (3-11-1, 1-9 CPL) stranded eight runners.
Alex Martynuska singled and doubled and McGinley doubled for Altoona (4-5), which had only four hits off loser Devin Jones and Wyatt Westen.
Four of Clearfield’s five errors figured in the scoring.
The Chiefs will go to Clarence Thursday.
