CLEARFIELD – The Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library slithered into the Dig Into Reading summer reading program with a week of unique creatures.
Coldblooded Curiosity presented to a captive audience of nearly 150 people about some of its unique creatures, including a 10-foot Burmese Python. One lucky youth won two tickets to a 2013 State College Spikes game. School-aged participants made a mole craft and created a worm farm. Dig Into Reading continues with many more exciting activities throughout the summer.
The first Family Fun Night of the summer will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday. Children and youth of all ages, along with their families, will make crafts and do activities while digging into customs and traditions of the past.
On Tuesday at 10:30 a.m., participants of all ages are encouraged to witness the magic of summer reading. M&M Magic will conduct their one-of-a-kind show. The event promises to entertain the young and the young at heart.
Read-to-Me participants who attend “Dinos and Fossils” on June 26 at 10:30 a.m. will learn about dinosaurs and fossils through several unique crafts and activities.
The Dig Into Reading events will conclude on June 27 at 10:30 a.m. Participants in the School Age A and School Age B program are invited to join fossil expert Peggy Johnston of Penn State DuBois. Her presentation will include a look at fossils and how they are discovered.
Beneath the Surface, a summer reading program for young adults, continues on June 27 at 2 p.m. “Tote-ally Beneath the Surface” will have participants decorating a new tote bag or up-cycling an old tote. Those interested in attending are required to register for the program at the front desk of the library prior to 5 p.m. on June 26. All those in attendance must bring their own tote bag to decorate.
Adults enrolled in the Groundbreaking Reads summer reading program are reminded to direct questions for the “Got Gadgets?” program later this summer to Shaw Public Library staff. Also, any interested adult may submit a recipe using fresh fruits and/or vegetables to be compiled into a “From Garden to Table” recipe book. Forms for both question submission and recipe submission are available at the front desk of the library. Finally, any adult interested in learning more about Facebook should contact the front desk of the library for more information on a Facebook Photo Novice class.
There will be no summer reading programs held during the week of the Independence Day holiday. All programming will resume the week of July 8 through July 12.
Registration for the Dig Into Reading summer reading program continues throughout the summer. All registrations are completed online at Shaw Public Library’s Web site. Registration is completed when participants pick up their registration packets at the front desk of the library. Children ages birth through preschool age should enroll in the Read-to-Me program. Youth who have completed kindergarten through second grade are encouraged to participate in the School Age A program and those who have completed grades three through five will enroll in the School Age B program.
The Beneath the Surface young adult summer reading program is open to anyone who has completed grades six through eleven and Groundbreaking Reads adult summer reading program is available to all adults, including 2013 high school graduates.
