CURWENSVILLE – In a Saturday make-up from last week, it was Brockway who took a page out of the Curwensville Area High School softball team’s playbook. Â Throughout the season, the Lady Tide had been able to turn the tables in rematches with teams who had beaten them. Â However, the Lady Rovers found their revenge in Saturday’s match winning by the same 3-1 mark from the earlier contest.
Curwensville defeated Brockway 3-1 on April 16.
“Almost always in tight games it comes down to who breaks first,” said Curwensville head coach Allen Leigey. Â “They were able to take advantage of a couple of our mistakes to get the win.”
Brockway jump to the early lead in the first inning as Juli Espisito and Adrianna Terwiliger laid down back-to-back bunt singles. Â Both runners moved up a base on a passed ball, and Espisito scored on a ground out by Brooke Carlson for a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first, the Golden Tide responded to the visitor’s charge. Â A Sarah Wriglesworth single was erased on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Taylor Goodman. Â Goodman moved to second with two outs as Tiffany Carter was hit by a pitch. Â Goodman stole third and both runners advanced. Â Abby Johnson then singled up the middle to score Goodman, but Carter was cut down at the plate by Espisito on a strong throw from center to keep the score knotted.
The end of the day’s scoring came in the third inning and again Espisito was at the start of things. Â Espisito tripled to right to lead off the third inning and scampered home after one out on an attempted bunt that wasn’t controlled at first base. Â Rover pitcher Alex Wright was the recipient of the error and eventually moved to third on a wild pitch and a passed ball. Â Wright scored moments later when a hard hit to the circle was knocked down but thrown away at first.
“We made some great plays in the field today,” Leigey said, “but we also had some miscues that were crucial in the game. Â Abby Dugo scooped up a bunch of hard hit balls, Sarah Wriglesworth threw a runner out at second and Tiffany Carter gunned down someone on an attempted steal. Brockway was just able to catch us on the errors.”
In the sixth inning, Curwensville tried to get on the board again as Goodman singled with one out, but was erased on a fielder’s choice. Â With a runner on, Carter singled. Â Johnson followed with a single up the middle, but a second strong throw from Espisito was on target to the plate, and the hosts were denied again.
While the game marked the final home appearance for six seniors – Wriglesworth, Goodman, Pentz, Carter, Johnson, Tricia Laird and Emily McGarry – the team is not done playing yet.  Curwensville will travel to Moniteau on Thursday for the a quarterfinal match-up in the District IX Class AA playoff.
“I asked the girls to feel the sting of losing after the game,” Said Leigey. Â “If we feel that sting on Thursday, it’s over. Â It’s good to get into the playoffs because you never know what can happen. Â We have to resign ourselves to do whatever it takes to get through Moniteau.”
Thursday’s game is scheduled for a 4:30 start at Moniteau High School.
