After reading the latest Gant rant by Edith Barber, I went to Snopes.com and looked into the matter. Several points of clarification: Interpol has no police force, does not conduct investigations or make arrests. It facilitates coordination and info sharing between 188 member countries, but has no authority to make anything happen against a sovereign nation’s will (sounds like a good thing for the War On Terror, no?).
The immunity granted is the same as that granted to the International Red Cross, the World Bank, and International Pacific Halibut Commission. The immunity was first issued by Ronald Reagan (gasp!) in ’83, and G.W. Bush’s (gasp again!) State Dept. recommended the current revision in ’04 but never got around to it, so it rolled over to the Obama administration (like so many other problems (sigh)).
I could now go on a rant about well meaning people who are duped by a vast Right-wing conspiracy, but I wont. lol!
