I would like to thank the many businesses and individuals who helped support our trout stocking program. I was able to release over 1,100 pounds of trout, which includes some of the largest ever stocked, in the river near the Curwensville Civic Center area. It is a tribute to all of you great people who knew together we could make a great fishery of the West Branch of the Susquehanna River for all to enjoy.
The following are a list of special dates to mark on your calendar for the fall. In late September, I will have the “Squirrel Tails” again for the trout program that involves mentored youth hunting season along with families. Again, I ask the hunters collect as many squirrel tails as possible and please contact me at 236-3621. We receive 26 cents for every gray, black or fox squirrel tail I ship to Mepps Spinners in Wisconsin. With the (recycling) program, we use all monies to purchase trout for the river. We’ve had the Squirrel Tails for Trout program for the past four years.
On Wednesday, Oct. 8, the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission will again stock trout at the Hyde Bridge area down to Elliot Park, marking the third state stocking in the West Branch. This year, the west branch of the river will receive approximately 15,000 trout from Curwensville to Clearfield, which is eight miles of great fishing in your own “backyard.” With the high price of gas, we can be thankful for the West Branch.
Others who have helped stock trout in this portion of the river include: Old Town Sportsmen’s Club, Susquehanna Rod & Gun Club of Mahaffey, Curwensville Moose and the Curwensville American Legion.
With the date yet to be announced on a late Sunday in October, Curwensville Anglers Restocking Program (C.A.R.P.) will again be stocking walleyes in the Curwensville Lake. We encourage all outdoor enthusiasts to join C.A.R.P. that afternoon and help stock the lake. Again, it was all your financial support and belief the Walleye Program would succeed that made this stocking possible. The day will also be special, as you’ll get to taste Ron Lippert’s homemade chili, baked bread and great hot peppers. This promises to be a great Fall Sunday afternoon, and we’d like you to share it with us. After all, you made it happen and are committed to promoting “local” tourism.
