HYDE — The Clearfield Area High School boys and girls track teams swept Penns Valley and Huntingdon on Tuesday afternoon at the Bison Sports Complex to each raise their record to 6-1.
The boys beat Penns Valley 84-66 and Huntingdon 112-38. The girls clipped Penns Valley 76-70, while they easily beat Huntingdon 107-42.
The girls meet was highlighted by Jessica Shomo breaking the long-standing school record in the 100 meters with a time of 12.6 seconds. The old record of 12.8 was set in 1978 by Celeste Koval, then matched in 2000 by Megan Plubell.
Head coach John Jacob had this to say about the girl’s narrow victory, “The girls had their toughest test of the season in the Mountain League and responded in a big way. Every time the coaching staff would work out the score, we had Penns Valley winning by one or two points. Our girl’s team pulled out some very big victories in the relays and individual events. Freshman Rachel Glenny had three strong individual performances winning the 100 Hurdles, 300 hurdles and 1600m. Rachel has been a huge addition to the team this year. She has filled in all over the track and allows us to move other girls into key positions to score even more points. Another key performance was Courtney Smith in the 3200m run. Courtney was able to run to victory with a personal best time of 12:42.”
Accolades were also handed out for the boys team by Coach Jacob, “For the boys, the two victories ensured their first winning season since I have been the head coach. Our boys have been on a roll since an early season loss to Bellefonte. Since then they have racked up six wins in a row and have done so in convincing fashion. We have been steadily improving in every area. Dylan Graham and Jeremy Goodrow have both cleared 10 feet in the pole vault. Tyler Stratton and Rico Longoria are a strong 1-2 punch in the sprints along with Graham and Stratton in the hurdles. It is tough for other teams to match our depth in those areas. The emergence of Seth Ford and Jake Wingate has allowed us to move them into key roles in the relay and freed up Graham, Stratton and Longoria to get points in their individual events. The boys’ distance is also holding off the competition with Jon Sponsler, Alec Freeman and Jack Soult. These three have become very strong distance runners and are able to match up very well against other teams in the relay and individual events. Not to be outdone, throwers like Ryan Lingle, Wyatt Flannigan and Jon Bush are steadily improving and continue to get us key individual victories.”
Clearfield will head to Lock Have University on Friday for the Bald Eagle Invite and then will host Central on Tuesday April 23.
