PINE TOWNSHIP – An early morning accident along Interstate 80 claimed the life of an as-of-yet unnamed driver.
State police in Clearfield reported that around 4:18 Thursday morning near mile marker 108.5 a 2001 International driven by Brian McNicholas of Janesville, WI, was stopped in the westbound right lane of travel due to an accident in front of him. He started moving into the left lane to get around the accident when he was struck from behind by the driver of a 2005 Freightliner. The Freightliner came to rest partially blocking the left lane of travel. The McNicholas vehicle came to rest blocking the entire left lane of travel.
Both drivers were wearing their seat belts. McNicholas was not injured. According to police the driver of the Freightliner died as a result of the accident and that driver’s name will not be released until the next of kin are notified.
Police were assisted at the scene by Clearfield Emergency Medical Services, Lawrence Township Fire Company and Sandy Township Fire Company.
