CLEARFIELD – Police officers in Clearfield Borough may have the option of riding a motorcycle about town in the warmer months.
Clearfield Borough Mayor Patty Gilliland presented Clearfield Borough Council a proposal that would allow the police department to use a Harley Davidson from DuBois Harley Davidson for a six month term.
Gilliland said that outside of insurance fees, there would be no additional cost to the borough.
“I think it’s a great idea,” said Fred Wisor, council member and former chief of police.
Wisor went on to state that the Clearfield Borough Police Department used to have a motorcycle.
“They (the officers) will be more noticeable on the bike,” said Wisor.
Gilliland added that police officers will also have motorcycle training available at reduced costs.
Clearfield Borough Fire Chief Brett Owens suggested the police department look into purchasing a four wheeler as well. Owens said that when Clearfield County Jail had a prisoner escape a few months back, fire departments from across the county were asked to lend their four wheelers to the search effort.
Gilliland said after the meeting that after the six month period, the borough will have a purchase option on the motorcycle.
Council will consider the issue at a future meeting.
