RIDGWAY – With deck replacement work complete, PennDOT plans to fully open two Elk County bridges on today. Making the repairs will keep the bridges in service for years to come. Both bridges are located on Route 949 near Portland Mills. The bridges are about 500 feet apart, with one spanning Toby Creek and one spanning the railroad. Traffic has been controlled at the bridges by temporary signals. Once both lanes are opened on the bridges, PennDOT will turn the signals off and remove them.
Work included full deck replacements for each bridge, concrete repair, bearing replacement, painting, roadway widening, paving, and guide rail replacement. Work was completed well ahead of the original, spring 2013 date.
The repairs were part of a contract to preserve three bridges in Elk and McKean counties. The Tally Ho Bridge on Route 219 in McKean County was the third bridge covered in this contract. The L.C. Whitford Company Inc. of Wellsville, NY was the contractor for this $2.4 million job.
