TYRONE — On Tuesday afternoon the Clearfield Area High School girls and boys cross country teams traveled to Tyrone for a Mountain League tri-meet with host Tyrone and Bald Eagle Area.
The girl’s record remained spotless at 6-0 after posting 23-36 and 15-50 wins over Tyrone and BEA respectively. The boys (3-3) remained at .500 after losing to Tyrone 33-22 and beating BEA 20-42.
Head Coach John Jacob appears to have his team peaking as the season winds down towards the post-season, “The girls and boys both put in a very hard past week of training in preparation for the end of the season. On the girl’s side, Claire Mikesell was able to get close to Tyrone’s top runner and was reeling her in towards the end but was not able to close the gap in the final mile. Courtney Smith and Kristi Fox were able to hold off Bald Eagle’s top runner and Tyrone’s second runner. All three girls raced very well and continue to compete with the top girls in the MAC league in preparation for the League and District 9 Championship meet. Emily Aveni and Morgen Turner continue to improve and make very hard for other teams to beat our fourth and fifth place runners.  Over all the girls are becoming very hard to beat from our first to our fifth runners.”
The winner of the girl’s race was Curwensville’s Becca Johnson in 21:43, who trains with the Clearfield team, but competes unattached.
As far as the boy’s goes, Jacob sees his squad rounding into form, “I am really looking forward to see how the boys continue to improve as the season goes on. All of our boys are tightly grouped from 2-5 and they continue to push each other in practice. Josiah McClarren, Kenton Climie, Matt McKenzie, Vince Kovach and Jacob Ryan all have been pushing their limits through this season and their best races are yet to come. Assisstant Coach Todd Winters and I both see the potential and can see that their best races will be coming at the end of the season during the League and District 9 Championships. Sophomore Jon Sponsler is also doing very well running with the top runners in every race. He has really matured this season and for a young runner is competing with juniors and seniors for the lead in almost every race. Again I think Jon’s best races are going to come at the end of the season during the championship meets.”
