UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Junior Katie Slay (Raleigh, N.C.) was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for her performance in the Active Ankle Challenge, conference officials announced Monday (Aug. 27). This is the first honor of the season for Slay and the fourth of her career.
Slay was a threat on both offense and defense in Penn State’s three matches over the weekend. Slay helped Penn State to a 3-0 record in the Active Ankle Challenge hosted by Louisville. The Preseason All-Big Ten honoree tied for second on the team with 25 kills for the weekend on .500 hitting, while also contributing a team-best 16 blocks. She was named to the Active Ankle Challenge All-Tournament Team for her performance.
Against Morehead State on Friday, Aug. 24, Slay posted six kills and tied for first on the team with seven blocks. On Aug. 25 versus Western Kentucky University, Slay was second on the team with 11 kills and registered a .421 hitting percentage with three blocks. She closed out the weekend with eight kills in nine errorless swings for a .889 hitting percentage, and also led the Lions with six blocks.
Penn State opens its home slate next weekend on Aug. 31-Sept. 1 at Rec Hall in the Nike Big Four Volleyball Classic. Florida takes on Texas at 4:30 p.m. and Penn State faces Stanford at 8 p.m.
