CLEARFIELD – The Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library is currently accepting registrations for “Literacy Starts Here,” a six-week story session to be held this fall.
The fall session will showcase PA Forward, a statewide initiative that was launched earlier this year by the Pennsylvania Library Association (PaLA). Children ages 6 months through 5 years old will participate in special programs held each Tuesday and feature a variety of partnerships with community representatives.
The program begins Sept. 11 with special storytellers sharing Basic Literacy. Several retired teachers will share stories and activities with the children in attendance.
Local bank representatives will be available at the library Sept. 18 to discuss financial literacy with attendees.
Ronda Stiles of Penn State Cooperative Extension will present the health literacy information about the importance of eating breakfast to preschool participants Sept. 25. Children will be able to prepare a delicious breakfast recipe during the program.
On Oct. 2, the Clearfield Volunteer Fire Department will showcase Civic and Social Literacy and share with the children information about fire safety. In addition, participants will be able to explore a fire truck during the event.
Kevin Stibitz of Clearfield School District Technology Department will be present Oct. 9 to educate youngsters and parents on Information Literacy and the importance of staying safe online. The special events will come full circle on Oct. 16 with a return to Basic Literacy and another visit from several special storytellers. Additional retired teachers will again share stories and activities with any preschoolers in attendance.
Each program will be held from 10:30 a.m. – 11: 30 a.m. or from 1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. The library advises anyone interested in attending the programs to register for each program individually.
A calendar with dates and times for each program is also available at the front desk.
