HOUTZDALE – An old saying goes something like this: If it’s too good to be true, then it probably is.
Such was the case for two Houtzdale residents who received a letter stating that they had won a large sum of money in the North America Shoppers’ Lottery.
State police at Clearfield investigated the incident and said the two people, a 56-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman, sent a check for $1,975 to the lottery after they were notified that they won $155,000.
The money was reportedly sent by wire to officials in Montreal, Canada, to cover processing fees for their winnings.
After sending the money, the couple learned that the check was returned by the bank due to insufficient funds.
Then the couple was sent a check for the amount of their alleged winnings, but that document was found to be fraudulent.
Police are continuing their investigaiton.
