CURWENSVILLE — Even though the holiday break has begun for the Curwensville School District, it did not mean that there would not be some events happening at the school for students and parents. Monday night, as the frigid temperatures made it unbearable outside, the hardwood in Patton Hall was warming up and welcoming to all as the Lady Tide hit the court for the final time in the 2024 calendar year. On the other side of the court, the Lady Red Dragons of Purchase Line made the long trip over, and were ready for the competition.
The night was not easy for either team, especially if the opportunity came for free points. But, what stayed hot was Purchase Line on the floor, as they would manage to double-up the home squad, handing Curwensville a 58-29 loss on the night.
Neither team really had much to show when it came to opportunities at the foul line, which in the long run did not make much of a difference, but ultimately was an item both squads would address as the season continued. A total of 41 shots were taken at the charity stripe between the Dragons and Tide, but only 16 made it in the net. Despite that, Purchase Line’s play on the floor made it a daunting task for Curwensville to recover from.
The Lady Red Dragons took an early 14-9 lead, fueled by Alorra Phillips, who had a game-high 22 points, the lone Purchase Line player to hit double figures.
Curwensville kept fighting hard, giving all the roster a chance to get on the floor and have game experience. The team’s leading scorer for the game, Karleigh Freyer, put up a team-high 10 points.
Purchase Line kept the pressure going in the second half, after building up a 14-point lead heading into the locker room. Curwensville continued playing hard, but could only muster another 13 points in the final 16 minutes.
Curwensville (0-7) has off for the remainder of 2024 as they will return to the court on Monday, January 6, for the final game in their seven-game homestand. The opposition will come from the Lady Warriors of West Branch.
