HYDE-The start of the new campaign for the Clearfield Bison basketball season has been one of consistency, but also of challenges. In the first two games, the Bison nearly averaged the same amount of points, but also gave up nearly the same amount. In each game, they would fall by a similar margin. However, consistency is something the team has built upon in years past, and entering Monday night’s game against the Bellefonte Red Raiders, they were hoping to get over the hill.
It was the first time this season that Clearfield would be on their own hardwood inside the Bison Gymnasium, and this night was one that started fast, and stayed that way. After a strong first quarter, coupled with a lackluster effort by the opposition, the Bison sent the home crowd happy with a 61-51 triumph.
The first quarter defined how the game would go. Bellefonte came out ready to play, but Clearfield’s defense stonewalled them the entire eight minutes. The Red Raiders only mustered four points in the opening stanza. At the same time, Clearfield would nearly quintuple the output, as they finished the opening quarter with a 19-4 advantage.
Bellefonte managed to get their footing under them in the second quarter as they were able to outscore Clearfield, however they went into the locker room still down 31-20.
It was a solid night for Clearfield in scoring as Evett Maines finished with a team-high 21 points, with Braison Patrick adding in another 10.
The Bison came out of the locker room just as hot as they started as they stretched the lead out to a 49-30 advantage after three quarters. Heading into the fourth, the Red Raiders were in slight foul trouble as they eventually lost Ryder Hamilton, who put up 19 points on the night, with five fouls to his credit. Both teams committed 14 fouls for the game.
Bellefonte’s best quarter came in the fourth, as they put up 21 points in the stanza compared to Clearfield’s 12. Liam Halterman finished the game with a game-high 23 points, but it all was for not as Clearfield held on for the victory.
Sitting at 1-2, the Bison hit the road on Friday night when they travel to take on Bishop Guilfoyle.
