DUBOIS — Timberland Federal Credit Union is now able to serve people who live, work or worship in 14 counties.
Chief Executive Officer Joel Slagan said, “After 50 years of serving the people of Clearfield County and expanding into Centre and Jefferson counties over the years, TFCU is happy to be able to offer membership to more of our neighbors.”
Timberland now welcomes members from Armstrong, Blair, Cambria, Cameron, Centre, Clarion, Clearfield, Clinton, Elk, Forest, Huntingdon, Indiana, Jefferson and Mifflin counties.
TFCU Online Banking Allows Banking From Anywhere
Online banking makes it easy for those in neighboring counties to access Timberland’s financial services and take advantage of its low-interest rate loans.
Members can log in anytime to view transactions, make deposits, money transfers, loan payments, bill payments and send money to others.
Today, members have the option to save themselves a trip to a credit union branch with Timberland’s easy-to-use mobile app.
The app puts control of the account into the hands of the member. It even allows them to freeze their card if it is lost or stolen.
A Credit Union You Can Grow With
Timberland FCU offers Timberland Kids accounts for children, as well as, a Nest Egg App, which children and parents can use together to create great money habits.
As children turn into young adults, Timberland is here to offer “Timber First” for first-time car owners, credit cards, personal loans, Home Equity Loans, savings and checking accounts and more.
What is a Credit Union
Credit unions are similar to banks, they offer checking and savings accounts, vehicle loans, home equity loans and more.
The difference between a bank and a credit union is that credit unions are not-for-profit organizations. They are owned by the people, who have savings “share” accounts, known as members.
Each member receives one vote when it comes to choosing the board of directors. Because a credit union is not for profit, the board uses revenue to offer members the lowest rates it can for loans and provides increased interest rates for savings and share certificates.
Credit unions were created to be an alternative to banks. Timberland works hard to remain steadfast to its philosophy of, “People helping people.”
Credit Unions are also community-focused, this is why Timberland offers things such as the Folds of Honor Debit Card.
When members use their Folds of Honor Debit Card, a portion of every purchase goes directly to Folds of Honor to help family members of fallen military personnel and emergency responders with education expenses.
TFCU’s 50-Year History
Timberland has a 50-year history of serving the people of Clearfield County.
It was created in 1973 as the Riverside Employee Federal Credit Union. The employees of Riverside wanted to create a financial organization that would work for them.
The success of the Riverside Employee Federal Credit Union led to the board of directions expanding the organization in 1985 to help even more people.
They decided to rename the organization Timberland Federal Credit Union. In French, DuBois means “of the woods,” fitting, since it was known for its timber industry.
“Grow became a word we do and say a lot,” Slagan said. Today, Timberland has four branches located in DuBois, Clearfield, Philipsburg and Pleasant Gap.
The board has decided it is time to make the credit union available to people in the surrounding counties, so they too can benefit from its services.
“We are excited for what the future will bring,” Slagan said.
