The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced the following schedule of maintenance activities in Clearfield County the week of July 15. PennDOT performs year-round maintenance in its mission to provide a safe, efficient transportation system, and the scope of work in Clearfield County for the coming week is as follows:
Base Repair:
- Route 255 from the bridge spanning Bark Camp Run in Huston Township to Tyler Road in Huston Township. Monday, July 15. Motorists are advised that traffic control and traffic patterns will vary, to be alert for workers and equipment in the roadway, and to expect short delays.
Base repair is intended to repair fatigue cracked, potholed or distorted pavement sections and restore the structural integrity of the pavement. All distressed material within the area, including the material beneath the asphalt, is removed and replaced with sound material. The new material is then compacted before being overlayed with new asphalt. Base repair extends the service life of good and fair roads and provides a smooth, safe ride for motorists.
Crack Seal & Hot Pour Mastic
- Route 1012 (Shiloh Road) from the intersection with Route 2023 at Woodland Park in Bradford Township to the intersection with Route 2030 (Bigler Cutoff) in Bradford Township. Monday, July 15, through Thursday, July 18. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
- Route 1010 (Needful Road) from the intersection of Route 322 to the intersection of Route 970 in Bradford Township. Friday, July 19. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
Crack sealing and hot pour mastic operations prevent water intrusion from seeping through cracks or joints in an asphalt road, which can lead to potholes and pavement breakup. They are proactive preventive maintenance strategies to prevent water from entering the roadways and accelerating the formation of potholes and other failures.
Manual Patching
- Route 322 between the intersection of Route 970 at Wallaceton and the intersection of Blue Ball Road in Boggs Township. Monday, July 15, through Wednesday, July 17. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
- Route 2021 (Gearhartville Road) from the intersection of Route 53 to the intersection of Blue Spruce Road in Decatur Township. Thursday, July 18, and Friday, July 19. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
Most permanent pothole patching is completed in the spring/summer when temperatures stay consistently above freezing. If maintenance crews were not repairing potholes, the road surface would break up further and require more expensive corrective measures.
Pipe Replacing & Cleaning, Ditching
- Route 865 in Beccaria Township. Monday, July 15, through Friday, July 19. PennDOT will implement a detour using Route 2002 (Utahville Road) and Route 53 during daylight hours only.
- Route 36 from New Washington Street in Newburg to the intersection of Route 2019 at Mahaffey. Monday, July 15, through Friday, July 19. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
- Route 3016 (Town Road/New Washington Street) from the intersection of Ridge Road in Burnside Township to the intersection of Main Street in Newberg. Monday, July 15, through Friday, July 19. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
- Route 2014 (Ashland to Coal Run Road) from the intersection of Parsonville Road to the intersection of Beaver Lane in Decatur Township. Monday, July 15, through Wednesday, July 17. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
- Route 53 from Irvona to Glen Hope, and through Glen Hope to Brisbin. Wednesday, July 19, through Friday, July 19. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
- Route 1009 (Deer Creek Road) between Route 53 and the Bigler Cutoff in Morris Township. Monday, July 15, and Tuesday, July 16. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
- Route 2039 from Johnson’s Road to Firehouse Road in Cooper Township. Wednesday, July 17. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
- Route 219 between the Route 322 intersection in Brady Township School Road and the City of DuBois. Tuesday, July 16, through Friday, July 19. Motorists are advised that traffic control and traffic patterns will vary, to be alert for workers and equipment in the roadway, and to expect short delays.
Pipe replacement and cleaning are essential in maintaining water flow around state roadways. Controlling water flow is one of the most important aspects of maintaining pavements. Uncontrolled water flow will damage both the pavement surface and the area under the pavement, which causes deterioration across the length of the pipe.
Shoulder Maintenance
- Route 4005 (Greenville Pike) from the intersection of Route 879 in Pike Township to the intersection or route 219 in Bloom Township. Monday, July 15, and Tuesday, July 16. Route 255 from the bridge spanning Bark Camp Run in Huston Township to Tyler Road in Huston Township. Monday, July 15. Motorists are advised that traffic control and traffic patterns will vary, to be alert for workers and equipment in the roadway, and to expect short delays.
- Route 3011 (Irishtown Road/Walltown Road) from the intersection of Route 219 at Grampian to the intersection of Route 219 in Bloom Township. Wednesday, July 17, through Friday, July 19.
Shoulder cutting removes excess material and debris from unpaved shoulder areas. Shoulder grading involves the shaping and stabilizing of those same areas. Both operations improve drainage, allow water to leave the roadway, and eliminate shoulder drop-offs. These are crucial highway maintenance operations because when drainage systems do not function properly, water collects on the road, weakens pavement, accelerates the formation of potholes, and creates the potential for icing conditions in the winter months.
Side Dozing
- Route 153 (Crooked Sewer Highway) from the intersection of Atlantic to Henderson Road in Woodward Township to the intersection of Route 2023 (Glenn Richey Highway) in Lawrence Township. Monday, July 15, through Wednesday, July 17. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
- Route 2012 (Faunce Road) from the intersection of Turkey Hill Road in Knox Township to the intersection of Ashland to Burly Road in Decatur Township. Thursday, July 18, and Friday, July 19. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
Side dozing removes excess material from beneath guide rail areas, which improves drainage and allows water to sheet flow off the roadway. Side dozing is a crucial highway maintenance operation because when drainage systems do not function properly, water collects on the road, weakens pavement, accelerates the formation of potholes, and creates the potential for icing conditions in the winter months.
Vegetation Management
· Route 53 between Blue Spruce Road in Bigler Township and Curtin Street in Osceola Mills. Monday, July 15, through Friday, Jul 19. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
Mowing, herbicide spraying, and selected tree thinning help maintain a safe roadway free of obstructing vegetation, improving visibility to spot signage, traffic control devices, and other motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians, and animals approaching the road. Additionally, a well-maintained roadside can improve drainage and prolong the life of the roadway.
