ST MARY — Clearfield Bison baseball played the first of their three consecutive road games Thursday against St. Marys. The team suffered yet another heart-breaking loss, losing 4-3 on a walk-off.
Each team started a junior on the mound with Craig Mays of the Bison facing off against the Flying Dutch’s Ben Paul.
Anthony Lopez led off the game with a single, before two batters later he scored on an error by the first baseman off the bat of Hunter Rumsky to get an early 1-0 Clearfield lead.
The Bison offense came back to life just two innings later. Cole Bloom and Rumsky hit two straight singles, before Derrick Mikesell came through with a one out single to drive in a pair, making it 3-0 Clearfield.
A pick off that ended the bottom of the third inning on the base paths, also allowed Ben Reynolds to cross the plate and cut the lead to 3-1.
The bats were quiet for each team for the next two innings.
In the bottom of the sixth, a single from Lucas Bauer drove in Reynolds for his second run of the game, and the Bison lead was cut to 3-2.
Despite getting two on with no outs in the top of the seventh, the Bison failed to get a much needed insurance run to extend their lead.
The Bison recorded two outs to start the bottom of the seventh inning, but after hitting two batters, and a single by Tysen Beimel, Mays’ day was complete.
Christian Welker was brought in with two outs and the bases loaded with the he tying and winning runs in scoring position.
Bauer stepped to the plate, and came through in the clutch with a two-rbi single to end the game and give the Flying Dutch a 4-3 victory, dropping the Bison to 2-4 on the season.
Clearfield’s hunt to get back in the win column continues on the road in DuBois Friday at 4:30.
