BROCKWAY — The original schedule for Thursday had the Curwensville Golden Tide returning back home to play host to their rival Brockway. But the amount of rain the area received earlier in the week caused the field at the Curwensville High School to be not in condition for any kind of action. Knowing this, the schools decided to move the contest from Curwensville to Brockway in hopes of getting it in.
An earlier start gave the two schools a chance. But, in the top of the third, the rain began falling and umpires pulled the teams into the dugout. With the Tide holding a 3-2 lead, the game was officially halted for the day.
Curwensville got on the board first in a big way. After Logan Kunkle walked to start the game, and with one out on the board, Andrew Pentz came to the plate. Looking at a 1-0 pitch, he would swing and caught the ball in the right spot, and got the right amount of power. The ball would sail deep, and make it over the center field wall, signaling a two-run homer to get the scoring going.
Brockway got both runs back in the bottom of the second inning when Chad Young hammered an RBI-single to bring Andrew Brubaker home. A few batters later, Matthrew Brubaker would bring Young home on another RBI-single that grounded its way through the infield to tie the game.
The Tide would get the lead back in the third. Lincoln Hoyt walked, then Pentz singled to short. A walk by Merek Sutika loaded up the bases, and one batter later it was a bases-loaded walk on four pitches that brought Hoyt across home plate to put Curwensville in front. The rains began falling hard as Gavin McDermott was to come to the plate. Umpires talked to the coaching staff from both teams and because the rain wasn’t going to stop for a while, it was better to halt the game and finish it later.
The Rovers and the Tide are slated to play one another again this coming Monday. Much like how earlier in the year when the Tide faced Juniata Valley and the game was paused due to darkness, it is possible that Thursday’s game will get finished as part of a double-header.
Prior to that, the Tide (1-3) will have another Saturday matinee contest this week as they head on the road yet again to face the Harmony Owls.
