MARTINSBURG — Despite taking leads of 2-0 and 7-6, the Clearfield Lady Bison lost their season opener 13-7 to the Central Lady Dragons in a game that featured 24 hits between the two teams.
The hosts outscored the visitors 7-0 over the final three innings to earn the win.
The Bison scored two unearned runs in the top of the first inning on RBI groundouts by Aevril Hayward and Eve Siegel after Ruby Singleton and Haley Billotte reached on errors to start the game.
Central plated five runs in the second inning to take a 5-2 lead.
The Lady Bison cut the lead to 5-4 after plating two runs again in the top of the third. Singleton led off the inning with a double and scored on a Billotte sacrifice fly after advancing to third on a wild pitch. Hayward singled to right and advanced to second on an error, then later scored on a wild pitch.
A 3-run fourth inning gave the Lady Bison a 7-6 lead after the Lady Dragons had upped their lead to 6-4.
Paige Houser worked a lead off walk into a run after advancing to second on Singleton’s second hit of the game and then scored on Billotte’s one out hit. Singleton then scored on Hayward’s hit to knot the score, and Siegel knocked in the go-ahead run with her second hit of the game.
The hosts proceeded to score two in the fifth to take an 8-7 lead, then sealed the win with a 5-spot in the home half of the sixth.
Singleton and Siegel had three hits for the Lady Bison, while Hayward had a pair. Billotte, Hayward, and Siegel each had two RBIs for the game.
Singleton’s third hit was the 100th of her career, only joining four other Lady Bison with the milestone. 2018 grad Brooke Cline currently holds the all-time hit record with 112.
Freshman pitcher Joelle Henry was saddled with the loss after pitching the middle two innings after relieving starter Megan Wisor.
The Lady Bison (0-1) will have their home opener on Monday at the Bison Sports Complex when they host Bellefonte.
