BEDFORD — The Clearfield Bison wrestling team continued their strong 2023-24 campaign as they placed second, one spot better than a year ago, at the Thomas Automotive Tournament at Bedford High School.
Defending champion Chestnut Ridge edged the Bison for the team title 191-183.5 in the 33-team field.
Leading the way for the Bison once again was junior Brady Collins who won the 152 pound gold after placing second last year as a 139 pound sophomore. Collins (30-2), the top seed, had three falls and a tech fall to reach the finals against the two seed, Penn Cambria’s Trent Hoover (32-3). Collins built up an early lead 6-1 lead in the first period on the strength of two takedowns and two back points. Collins held on for the 8-7 win after giving up a meaningless takedown to Hoover with 16 seconds remaining in the match. The 5-0 weekend gives Collins 103 wins, as he reached the 100-win mark in Friday night’s second round.
Number three seed Colton Ryan of the Bison dominated the number two seed Tyler Clark (18-10) of Frazier in the semifinals, building up a 9-1 lead before getting the fall right before the final buzzer in 5:58. Ryan (26-8) then repeated the third period fall when he pinned top seeded Mason Weyant (31-8) in 5:33 of a high scoring back-and-forth match that was 8-8 when Ryan reversed and got the fall.
Two other Bison fell one win short of the gold losing in the championship finals.
121 pound, and the second seed, Cash Diehl (21-8) lost 7-3 to top seeded Nate Wilhelm of Northern Garrett, MD. Diehl was down 7-0 and scored the last three points of the match.
At 127 fifth seeded Bryndin Chamberlain (18-11) upset the number one seed Julian Bertucci (27-9) 4-2 in the semifinals on the strength of a three point nearfall with a minute left in the final period. He was then defeated by the same 4-2 score by the number two seed, Kayvan Shams (25-4) of South Williamsport.
Like Collins, senior Carter Chamberlain came into the weekend with 98 career wins to his credit and got his milestone 100th win during Friday night’s second round. Chamberlain (21-6), the five seed, was then defeated twice on Saturday by the number four seed Teague Calvin (27-6) from Greenville, first 5-2 in the quarterfinals and the 3-2 in the consolation finals, to place fourth. Like Collins, Chamberlain left the tourney with 103 wins to his credit.
Also getting fourth for the Bison was another 133 pounder, Adam Rougeux (23-10). The number eight seed, Rougeux lost in the quarterfinals then ran off three straight wins, including a win over the number two seed, to reach the consolation finals. There he was defeated 4-0 by Burrell’s Jake Stewart (15-9).
Ty Aveni (26-13), the three seed at 145, went 4-3 over the weekend, including an overtime loss and a 2-0 loss to place sixth.
And seventh seed Colton Bumbarger (18-11) at 139 went 3-3 over the two days, losing 3-2 in the seventh place match, to finish eighth.
The ninth and final Bison to reach Saturday’s action was 114 pound Dakota Shugarts (15-11), but he lost his first consolation match and finished 3-2 for the tourney.
