HOUTZDALE — The Moshannon Valley Black Knights were able to field a complete 13-person squad Wednesday night on their home mat, and that was the difference in the outcome as they defeated cross-county rival Curwensville Golden Tide 39-28.
Contested matches went five each way, but the hots had their hands raised three time via forfeit and that proved to be the difference in the match score. Mo Valley evened their record at 2-2 on the season, while Curwensville dipped below the .500 mark at 5-6.
Two falls at 160 and 172 gave the Black Knights a quick 12-0 lead.
The Tide’s Heath Hawkins (12-4) continued his strong season with a 45 second fall at 189 to put the Tide on the board.
Logan Aughenbaugh (15-0) remained undefeated on the season when he needed a little over a minute to even the match score at 12 apiece at 215.
Tyler Lobb gave the lead back to the home team when he edged Trenton Guiher 2-0 at 285.
107 pounder Austin Gilliland (11-4) gave the visitors their first lead at 17-15 with his 18-3 tech fall.
An Autumn Shoff forfeit at 114 reversed the lead back to Mo Valley, while a Noah Pentz (7-7) first period fall at 121 gave the Tide their second, and final, lead at 23-21.
Forfeits at 127 and 139, sandwiched around a high scoring 14-11 loss at 133 sealed the Tide’s fate as they fell behind 36-23 with two matches to go.
At 145, Ryder Kuklinskie (7-4) had a fall to score the Tide’s last points and the match was concluded at 152 with another Black Knight narrow decision.
The Tide was deducted a team point setting the final at 39-28 in favor of the homestanding Black Knights.
Only one day to recover, as the Tide will be back on the road for the third consecutive dual when they travel to face Mt. Union Thursday night.
