TYRONE — Despite down two starters, the Clearfield Bison wrestling team had eight wrestlers make the podium, resulting in a fourth place finish at their first ever Laurel Highlands Conference championships at Tyrone High School.
Their 157 point total was right behind third place Bald Eagle Area’s 166 points and Chestnut Ridge’s 173 points. Bishop McCort had seven champs and ran away with the title after accumulating 245 team points.
Junior Brady Collins (13-1) suffered his first loss of the year in the 160 pound finals to Bishop McCort’s Devon Magro (22-4) by an 11-6 score after giving up seven points in the second period.
Returning from a month off due to injury, sophomore Cash Diehl (6-5) had a successful return while placing third at 121 pounds.
Also placing third, and rounding into form after his recent return from injury, was junior Carter Freeland (4-3) as a small 189 pounder.
A duo of Bison placed fourth after reaching the semifinals.
Sophomore Colton Ryan (10-6) had the unenviable task of facing the number one ranked wrestler in the country in the semifinals in McCort’s Bo Bassett, and then came back for fourth after the loss.
Junior Ty Aveni (11-6) was fourth at 152, while senior Will Domico (9-2) suffered his first two losses of the season while placing fifth at 172.
After being knocked into the wrestlebacks on Friday night, two Bison wrestlers managed to get on to the medal podium as well.
Sophomore Dakota Shugarts (9-7) was sixth at 114 and senior Adam Rougeux (9-5) placed seventh at 133.
The Bison (6-0) will return to the Arthur J. Weiss Gymnasium on Tuesday night when the host District 9 rival St. Marys (4-1) on Tuesday. The Flying Dutch just won the District 9 Wrestling League Tournament over the weekend.
