CURWENSVILLE — The success and popularity of girls wrestling in the best boys wrestling state in the nation was evident on Saturday at the Curwensville Area SEnior High School.
270 girls from grades kindergarten through 12th grade, and from all over the state, took part in the tourney.
When the mats were pulled up at the end of the day, the Curwensville varsity girls were sixth overall out of 20 teams, while the Clearfield girls were eighth.
In junior high action, the Lady Bison were second, while Curwensville was 11th.
Gabby Bamberger (9-4) at 148 and Emily Neeper (7-5) each earned gold medals for the Lady Tide. Tessa Queen (10-8), the team leader in wins, took fourth place at 142 in a loaded weight class.
McKenzie Astorino won the junior high tourney at 71 pounds, and Allison Neeper placed fourth at 148 for the Lady Tide.
Leading the Clearfield varsity was Makayla Taylor (6-1) with her second place finish at 155. Placing fourth were Alara Quickel (4-3) at 136, Meredith Switala at 155, and Taylor Blantz at 190.
Junior High placewinners for the Lady Bison were Kylie Knepp (1st – 103), Angela Rougeux (2nd – 125), Mia Ludwig (2nd – 148), Ashley Rougeux (3rd – 96), and Finley Gilbert (3rd – 125).
Both teams will next take to the mats next weekend at the Mid-Winter Mayhem Tournament on the IUP campus.
