CLAYSBURG-KIMMEL — The Curwensville Golden Tide wrestling team kicked off their 2023-24 campaign at the Inter County Conference Tournament on Friday night at Claysburg-Kimmel High School.
After the first night of wrestling the Tide’s 14-man contingent are in eighth place out of 14 teams with 40 points. Mount Union leads the pack with 65 points.
The Tide had two wrestlers reach Saturday morning’s semifinals, while six are still alive in the consolation bracket.
Junior 107 pounder Austin Gilliland (21-13 last season) went 1-0 and senior 189 pounder Logan Aughenbaugh (32-11) went 2-0 with two falls Friday to reach the semis.
Still alive in the wrestlebacks are Noah Pentz at 121, Owen Shaffer at 145, Ryder Kukinskie at 152, Alex Murawski at 172, Heath Hawkins at 215, and Trenton Guiher at 285. Murawski, Hawkins, and Guiher each went 2-1 on the opening night of the season.
Eliminated after going 1-2 were Cooper Haag at 127 and Sammy Gustafson at 172.
Going two and through were Trenton Clyde at 152, Dom Carfley at 189, Owen Caldwell at 215, and Brooks Hendershot at 285.
