SHARON — The Curwensville Golden Tide wrestling team sent six wrestlers to the Northwest tournament at Sharon High School over the weekend, and three of them placed, but only one in the top-4 to advance to the state championships in Hershey, which begin on Thursday.
113 pound senior Jacob Carfley (24-7) punched his first ticket to states with his third place finish. Carfley lost his semifinal matchup by fall to eventual two-time region champ and fifth place state medalist from 2021, Hunter Robison (33-3) of Saegertown. Once knocked in to the wrestlebacks, Carfley went 2-0 for the bronze. First he defeated Hickory’s Dylan O’Brien (29-14) by a 5-1 score. Then with Hershey or bust on the line, Carfley edged Commodore Perry’s Hunter Geibel (25-13) 3-1.
Carfley will face Bald Eagle Area sophomore Lucas Fye (30-8) in the round of 16 on Thursday at the Giant Center in Hershey.
Falling one spot short after losing in the consolation semifinals, but winning their fifth place matches, were junior 132 pounder Nik Fegert and sophomore 152 pounder Logan Aughenbaugh.
Fegert (27-12) lost his quarterfinal bout to eventual third place finisher Wyatt Lazzar (31-6) 6-0, then major decisioned Brody Beck (28-16) of Cambridge Springs by a score of 13-3 and also major decisioned Jonathon Bissell (26-16) of Sharpsville 10-2. Fegert couldn’t get his offense going and was beaten 1-0 in the consy semis by Brockway’s Parker Pisarchick (31-11). He then defeated Hickory’s Cody Miller (32-16) 5-1 to finish in fifth place.
Aughenbaugh reached Saturday morning’s semifinals, but was pinned by eventual champion Kane Kettering (31-8) of Reynolds. Aughenbaugh was edged by Eisenhower’s Gannon Jaquay (35-8) by a 3-2 score in the consy semis, and then defeated Brookville’s Carson weaver (21-21) by a 13-0 blow out to place fifth.
