MORRISDALE — The Bison knew going into Saturday’s second day of action at the Ultimate Warrior Tournament that they had a chance to place 10 of their 13 entrants. And also had an outside chance at the team title.
In the end, they did mange to place eight, as two lost in the “blood round”, and placed second overall behind Mifflin County in the team race 215.5 to 192.
Leading the charge for the Bison was undefeated 285 pounder Oliver Billotte (22-0), who easily marched to the title with five first period falls. HIs championship finals opponent was Gavin Thompson (22-3) of Brockway. Thompson lasted all of 33 seconds. Billotte’s career total in wins stands at 96 now, as he looks to join teammate Mark McGonigal in the Century Club this year.
The Bison had three other wrestlers make the final, but each fell short and were forced to settle for silver.
At 126 freshman Brady Collins (24-3) was taken down eight times, and escaped seven times, by nationally ranked freshman Dalton Perry (28-2) of Central Mountain. The final score ended up being an 18-7 major decision in favor of Perry.
Mark McGonigal (21-6) was involved in a back-and-forth affair with top seeded Garrett Garcia (18-3) of Southern Columbia in his 172 pound final. Garcia scored the opening takedown about a minute into the match only to be reversed to a 2-2 tie just 10 seconds later. The Southern Columbian sophomore escaped and took a 3-2 lead into the second period. McGonigal tied the match just 12 seconds in with an escape, but Garcia picked up his second takedown of the match to go out in front 5-3. McGonugal once again escaped, and then notched a takedown with nine seconds in the period to take a 6-5 lead into the final two minutes. Garcia tied it with an escape 25 seconds into the period, then took a two point lead with his third takedown of the match with 25 seconds remaining. McGonigal escaped with 10 seconds remaining to get within one, 8-7, but wasn’t able to score the winning takedown in the remaining short time.
Bison 215 pounder Hayden Kovalick (24-2) faced off with top seeded Anson Wagner (21-4) of Mifflin County in his finals match. Kovalick scored the bout’s opening takedown 30 seconds in to go up 2-0, but Wagner escaped a shortly afterwards and picked up his own takedown about a minute later to take a 3-2 lead into the second period. Kovalick immediately escaped to tie the score at the beginning of the period, but Wagner got a takedown with about a minute left to take a 5-3 lead into the final two minutes. The lone score of the period was a Wagner escape to set the 6-3 final.
The lone third placer for the Bison was sophomore Carter Chamberlain (20-6) at 189, who pinned Riley Parker (18-7) of Canton in 3:45. Parker had defeated Chamberlain 7-0 just last week at the Bison Duals.
Placing fifth was junior Evan Davis (19-8) at 113. Davis pinned Logan Rumberger (19-12) of Tyrone in 2:21. It was Davis’ second pin of Rumberger on the year, as he pinned him in the dual meet in 1:29.
Senior Karson Kline (14-9) at 152 had to injury default to Camren Klenke (15-12) of Reynolds when he ran out of injury time just 12 seconds into the match.
Freshman Ty Aveni (9-7) placed seventh at 132 pounds when he pinned Daniel Painter (14-13) of Juniata in 2:55 when he had a 4-1 lead at the time.
The two Bison to lose one win short of a medal were seniors Nolan Barr (16-11) at 138 and Luke Freeland (16-9) at 145.
The Bison (12-0) will be back in action on Thursday when they host Bellefonte (7-1) in a Mountain League match up.
Carter Davis, the 138 pound champion, of Central York was named the George Bainey Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament.
