THREE SPRINGS – The Rockets of Southern Huntingdon High School football team won its fourth straight game Friday night at home, defeating the visiting Golden Tide of Curwensville by a score of 45-17
It was the first ever meeting between the two schools. The Rockets are a AA squad out of District 6.
The Rockets used big plays on offense on most of its scores throughout the entire contest including two in the first 12 minutes.
Southern Huntingdon scored first on a 75 yard touchdown pass from Nate Myers to Owen Winter with Myers kicking the extra point.
Curwensville knotted the game at 7-7 at the 4:44 mark of the first quarter on a Dan McGarry quarterback sneak as Jake Mullins tacked on the PAT.
On the ensuing kick-off the Rockets let the ball hit at the four yard line, which was fielded by return man Winter. Three other Southern Huntingdon return players quickly huddled at the four with Dawson Booher coming out with the ball and then promptly racing 96 yards for the score. The Rockets two point conversion failed as the host team took a 13-7 lead after one quarter.
Mullins drew the Golden Tide to within three points, 13-10, when he kicked a 27 yard field goal right at the start (11:39) of the second frame. That would be the closest the Tide would come, however, the rest of the contest.
Southern Huntingdon would add three more scores before the halftime break to take a commanding 37-10 margin into the third quarter.
The Tide did score on its first possession of the second half with 7:07 in the third when McGarry found his favorite target, Ty Terry, on a nine yard pass with Mullins then adding the PAT.
The Rockets added the final score of the game with 3:09 to go in the third quarter on an eight yard scoring strike from Myers to Booher with Marino running in for the two point conversion setting the final score at 45-17 in favor of Southern Huntingdon.
The Tide, currently 4-4 on the year, finish the 2021 season with two games at home. Moshannon Valley will visit next Friday and then West Branch the following week.
