Hummingbird Speedway Results – 6/5/21

Reynoldsville- The BRP Modified Tour made their first of two scheduled trips to the Bird Saturday night to headline the fourth night of racing of the 2021 season. Garrett Krummert led 22 of 35 laps on his way to capturing his first win of the year with the BRP Modified Tour. Four of our regular divisions were in action as well. In the Carns Equipment Super Late Models, Doug Eck notched win #2 of the season. In the Swanson Heavy Truck Repair Semi Late Models, Eddie Connor also captured his second checkered flag of the season. In the Andy Man’s Car Care Four-Cylinders, Wayne Truitt went to victory lane for the first time this season. And, in the Sunny 106.5 FM Pure Stocks, Tim Steis made it three wins in a row at the Bird. 

The Carns Equipment Super Late Models kicked off the night’s feature racing action with Scott Alvetro and Doug Eck leading the field to the opening green flag of their 25-lap feature event. Eck jumped out to the lead on the start over Alvetro and Garrett Mott. Eck began to check out on the field as the laps continued to click away. On lap 10, Dylan Fenton was able to work his way around Mott to move into the third spot behind Eck and Alvetro. Eck led comfortably at the halfway mark with Alvetro and Fenton in second and third respectively. The race remained under green flag conditions until a caution for a mechanical failure on Fenton’s car on lap 16 set up the first restart of the race. The caution moved Mott back into the third position for the restart. On the restart, Eck pulled out to the lead over Alvetro and Mott. The race stayed green for about a lap or so before a caution for a wreck in turn 4 involving Alvetro and others set up the final restart of the race. The caution moved Mott to second and Kenny Schaffer to third for the restart. On the final restart, Eck jumped out to the point once again over Mott and Schaffer. The 5-laps-to-go signal was shown to the drivers with Eck having already built a comfortable lead on the field. Eck continued to extend his lead over the field in the final 5 laps enroute to capturing his second checkered flag of the season at the Bird. Eck was followed by: 2) Garrett Mott 3) Kenny Schaffer 4) Scott Alvetro 5) Paul Kot 6) Orvis Newcome lll 7) Dwayne Brooks 8) Dylan Fenton. DNS: Nathan Brady. Kot and Eck won the heat races. 

Dave Murdick and Rex King Jr. led a stout field of 20 BRP Big Block Modifieds trackside for their 35-lap, $2,000/win feature. Murdick jumped to the point on the start with King Jr. in second and Mike Dougherty in third. A lap or two was completed before a caution for a wreck in turn 4 set up the first restart of the race. On the restart, King Jr. used the high line to his advantage to power past Murdick to take the top spot on lap 3. Also on lap 3, Garrett Krummert used the high side to power his way into the third spot behind King Jr. and Murdick. A caution for a slow car on the frontstretch later that lap brought about another restart. On the ensuing restart, King Jr. pulled out to the lead as Murdick felt the pressure from Krummert for second. On lap 4, Krummert made the pass around Murdick on the high side to take the second spot. King Jr. continued to lead the way as he began to feel the pressure from a hard-charging Krummert for the lead. The race stayed green until a caution for a stopped car on the backstretch on lap 12 set up another restart. After another quick caution flag, the race saw another restart. On the restart, Krummert looked to the inside of King Jr. as they battled for the top spot. On lap 13, Brad Rapp was able to work his way around Murdick to move into third. Then, on lap 14, Krummert was able to use the low line to pull a slide job on King Jr and make it stick to take the race lead. Later that lap, a caution for a wreck in turn 2 brought about another restart. Krummert led the way on the restart over King Jr. and Rapp. At the cross flags, it was Krummert leading the way with King Jr. and Rapp following behind. The race remained under green flag conditions until lap 22 or 23 when another caution came out, setting up another restart. On the ensuing restart, Krummert jumped out to the point as Rapp challenged King Jr. for second. On lap 24, Rapp completed the pass to move into second behind Krummert. The race stayed green until lap 26 when a caution for a spin on the frontstretch brought about the final restart. Krummert jumped out to the lead on the restart and never looked back in the final 9 laps on his way to his first career win at Hummingbird and his first win of the year with the BRP Modified Tour. Krummert was followed by: 2) Brad Rapp 3) Rex King Jr. 4) Rex King Sr. 5) Chad Brachmann 6) Dave Murdick 7) Rick Regalski 8) Tony Pangrazio 9) Kyle Fink 10) Mike Dougherty 11) Chris Rudolph 12) Shawn Kozar 13) Mark Frankhouser 14) John Venuto 15) Rodney Beltz 16) Steve Slater 17) Nathen McDowell 18) Paul Kot 19) JR McGinley 20) Steve Barr. DNS: Eric Gabany. King Jr., Brachmann, and Rapp won the heat races.

The Swanson Heavy Truck Repair Semi Late Models were next to the track with Doug Surra and Eddie Connor leading the field to the green flag of their 20-lap main. Connor took the lead on the high side on the start over Surra and Gabe Shaffer. Connor began to extend his lead over the field as the laps clicked away. At the midway mark, it was Connor with a comfortable lead over Surra in second and Shaffer in third. Surra began to close in on Connor for the lead as the race neared its closing laps. Surra actually pulled side-by-side with Connor for the lead on the final lap, but he got trapped behind a lapped car which allowed Connor to notch his second win of the season at the Bird. Connor was followed by: 2) Doug Surra 3) Gabe Shaffer 4) Deegen Watt 5) Nick Loffredo 6) Joe Loffredo 7) Rich Runyan Jr. 8) Austin Wilson. DNS: Nick Erskine. Connor and Surra won the heat races. 

Devin Kaufman and Wayne Truitt brought the Andy Man’s Car Care Four-Cylinders to the bullring for their 15-lap feature race. Shawn Hadden threaded the needle in turn 4 of the opening lap to lead lap one over Truitt and Joe Beningo. On lap 2, Beningo worked his way by Truitt on the high side to move into the second position. On lap 7, Beningo took his car to the pit area which moved Truitt to second and Blake Joiner to third behind Hadden. At the halfway point on lap 8, Hadden led the way over Truitt and Joiner. With 5 laps to go, Hadden continued to have a decent sized lead over the field. On lap 11, Truitt closed in right on the back bumper of Hadden for the race lead. Just after the leaders took the two laps to go signal on lap 13, Truitt looked to the inside of Hadden and completed the pass to move into the top spot. On the final lap, Joiner retired from the race which moved Kaufman into the third position. Hadden gave it his all to get back by Truitt in the final couple of laps but it was not enough as Truitt held on to pick up his first win of the 2021 season. Truitt was followed by: 2) Shawn Hadden 3) Devin Kaufman 4) Carl Killinger 5) Justin Finland 6) Christina Killinger 7) Blake Joiner 8) Heidi Miller 9) Jim Boyer. DNS: Joe Anthony. DQ: Joe Beningo. Beningo and Joiner won the heat races. 

The Sunny 106.5 FM Pure Stock feature was the finale for the evening with Josh Fields and Cody Cassler leading the way for their 15-lap main. Fields led the way on lap 1 with Tim Steis in second and Bryce Swauger in third. On lap 3, both Steis and Swauger were able to use the low side to their advantage to move past Fields and move into first and second respectively. A caution for a spin on the frontstretch set up the first restart of the race. On the restart, it was Steis out to the lead over Swauger and Fields. The race stayed green for a couple of laps before a caution for a wreck in turns 1 and 2 on lap 5 brought about another restart. After another quick caution flag, the race neared its halfway mark. At the halfway mark, it was Steis continuing to lead with Swauger close behind and Fields third. On lap 9, Andy Frey used the low line to his advantage to work his way by Fields to move into the third spot behind the two leaders. That happened just before another caution for a spin in turn 2 brought about another restart. Swauger gave Steis all he could handle on the restart but a caution for a spin in turn 2 set up what would ultimately be the final restart of the race. The final restart set up a final 5 lap dash to the finish. Swauger once again gave Steis all he had in the final laps but it came up short as Steis held on to capture his third checkered flag in a row at Hummingbird. Steis was followed by: 2) Bryce Swauger 3) Andy Frey 4) Josh Fields 5) Dustin Challingsworth 6) Dennis Harrison Jr. 7) Jim Challingsworth 8) Wayne Garvey 9) Cody Cassler 10) Shawnee Sturgeon 11) Bob Holt 12) Josh Bloom 13) Ashley Kilhoffer 14) Cory Wolfe 15) Jake Foradori 16) Stephen Studer 17) Jenna Pfaff 18) Kyle Lindemuth. DNS: Lester Hudson. Swauger, Dustin Challingsworth, and Steis won the heat races. 

Speedway Notes: 69 cars filled the pits for the fourth week of racing. That breaks down to: 9 Super Late Models, 21 BRP Big Block Modifieds, 9 Semi Late Models, 11 Four-Cylinders, and 19 Pure Stocks. Next Saturday will feature the Al Connor Memorial Semi Late Special. Also, there will be a special for our Economod division. Super Lates, Semi Lates, Pure Stocks, and Four-Cylinders will all be on the card as well. The Pro Stocks will once again have the week off in respect to the Penn Ohio Steel Valley Pro Stock Nationals being held at Sharon Speedway. Gates open at 4:00 with racing beginning at 7:00. The Sub Hub Kids Club gets underway every Saturday night at 6 pm by the pit gate entrance.
