CLEARFIELD – Tuesday was Pennsylvania’s Municipal Primary Election.
In Clearfield County, Republican and Democratic voters selected their candidates to appear on November’s ballot for county sheriff, prothonotary and clerk of courts and controller.
Additionally, those in the DuBois area took part in a special election to fill the vacant magisterial district judge seat, 46-3-01, and those in Clearfield Borough chose a new mayor.
In the race for controller’s office, Republican Robert Edwards Jr. (4,773 votes) defeated his opponent Kaitlin E. Evans (3,096 votes).
Edwards will now meet Democrat Zachary Bloom, who received 2,522 votes on his side of the ballot Tuesday, in November’s election.
Prothonotary Brian Spencer, Republican, received 7,696 votes, and will have a fall rematch of the 2017 election with Democrat Curtis Campman. Campman received 2,599 Primary votes.
Finally, County Sheriff Michael Churner received 8,014 Republican votes, and will appear unopposed on November’s ballot.
There were six candidates in the special election for the magisterial district judge’s office in DuBois, which was vacated by Pat Ford when he retired in October of last year.
Candidates included Randall T. Vargas, Michael S. Marshall, Elliot M. Gelfand, Scott T. Farrell, Gilbert J. Barker and David Sean Meholick.
All six candidates cross-filed and appeared on both Republican and Democratic ballots with Meholick taking the Republican side with 835 votes and Gelfand the Democratic side with 275 votes.
Republicans Mason Strouse and Jason Holencik met in the race for Clearfield Borough mayor with Strouse winning with 372 votes. Holencik had 202 votes.
The above results do not include absentee and mail-in ballots, according to Commissioner John A. Sobel, board chairman, which will only slightly alter results once they’re merged together.
The county had approximately 2,400 absentee and mail-in ballots cast, according to the county’s official Election Central Web site.
