CURWENSVILLE — The week-long run of games at home for the Curwensville Lady Tide has been a tough go since the beginning of the week. Thursday night would be the fourth game in a row, with five games total slated in a six-day spread. The final home game of the week, and of the season, would see DuBois come into Patton Hall for the 6:30 p.m. tip-off.
Much like every game leading into the contest with DuBois, the Lady Tide battled hard, with a lot of desire. But, the Beavers brought a lot of speed, and spread the floor, overwhelming the Lady Tide, handing them their fourth loss in as many days, 57-26.
Things got off to a quick start for DuBois as Olivia Johnson was dealing baskets from the paint, and would account for 10 of the Beavers’ 18 opening quarter points. At the same time, the defense of DuBois was putting a lot of pressure on Curwensville, as they would cause misguided passes and force the Lady Tide to commit six turnovers. The home squad only put up seven points in the quarter, making it almost impossible to climb back.
But, the second quarter saw the Tide begin a slight run and get a lot of confidence both offensively and defensively.
Joslynne Freyer would bucket six points in the quarter, but she also accounted for a pair of key rebounds to help get second-chance opportunities, and a steal. Still, Curwensville trailed 28-15 at the half, and were showing signs of being tired. Curwensville only had eight players dressed, with many of the starters playing a majority of the first half.
DuBois came out in the second half just as strong as the first, as they would drop 17 points in the frame, while holding the Tide to just eight. All eight of those points came from Alyssa Bakaysa, who finished with a team-high 12 points. She would be just short of a double-double with nine boards, and was just three blocks away from a potential rare triple-double. Only four players for Curwensville would score on the night.
Three players would hit double figures for DuBois, as Madison Rusnica led all scorers with 17 points, while both Johnson and Abby Guiher both added 12 points. Johnson led the Beavers with six rebounds.
Curwensville (5-13) has now completed their season. The Saturday game at Sheffield has been cancelled.
