HARRISBURG – State Reps. Tommy Sankey (R-Clearfield/Cambria) and Jim Rigby (R-Cambria) have been appointed to serve as deputy whips for the 2021-22 Legislative Session under House Majority Whip Donna Oberlander (R-Armstrong/Clarion/Forest).
“Last session, both of Reps. Sankey and Rigby assisted me with the Majority Policy Committee as deputy policy chairmen, and I am happy that they will continue their service as deputy whips in the new term,” Oberlander said.
“Both Tommy and Jim are well respected by their colleagues, and their insight and experiences from their districts will serve our caucus well in their new roles.”
“It’s an honor to be asked to serve in this capacity,” said Sankey, who was recently elected to serve his fifth term in office.
“I enjoyed working with Donna last term on the Policy Committee, which is more active in traveling the state and getting a first-hand look at the important issues that drive or deter Pennsylvania.
“This responsibility is more hands on involving individual members with whom I’ve established a relationship.”
Deputy whips have a variety of responsibilities on the House floor, including assisting with member head counts and helping to promote certain challenging issues facing the House Republican Caucus.
They also keep Oberlander informed about issues that might have an effect on the legislative agenda and on the caucus as a whole.
“For me as a freshman last term, serving with Donna on the Policy Committee was a good steppingstone into playing a more active role in our caucus,” Rigby added.
“I truly respect the duties that are being assigned to me and look forward to taking a larger role in the legislative process through this appointment.”
