ALLPORT – The Curwensville Golden Tide and the West Branch Warriors renewed its football rivalry Friday night after a 22 year absence and the Warriors picked up its second straight win of the season with a 21-14 victory over the visiting Gooden Tide.
West Branch opened the scoring at the 2:53 point of the opening quarter on a Will Herring six yard run with senior kicker Sarah Betts adding the extra point as the Warriors took the early lead at 7-0.
The Tide knotted the game at 7-7 just over a minute later at 1:46 of the first on a Thad Butler 24 yard run with Jake Mullins tacking on the PAT.
The second half began with West Branch receiving the kick-off and promptly marching in for the go ahead TD as freshman quarterback Tylar Biggans went in from the one yard line as Betts was again good on the PAT. The opening drive of the half ate up six minutes and 32 seconds.
On the first play of the fourth quarter Herring gave West Branch a two touchdown margin, 21-7, when the senior running back went 54 yards to pay dirt as Betts was once again perfect on the PAT. Herring finished the game with 136 yards on 20 carries.
Thad Butler made things interesting and exciting by taking the ensuing kick-off 76 yards for his second score of the night and with the extra point by Mullins Curwensville was just down 21-14. Butler, like Herring, also had 136 yards rushing, but on just 14 carries.
Unfortunately for Curwensville the Tide would not find the end zone the rest of the way as West Branch hung on for the victory.
West Branch improved to 3-5 on the year and is scheduled to host Claysburg-Kimmel next Friday night at 7 pm.
Curwensville, now 1-5 on the year, is scheduled to travel to play Keystone on Friday with a 7 pm kick-off in its final game of the 2020 season. Keystone defeated the Tide, in Curwensville, earlier this season 26-16.
