CLEARFIELD – Clearfield Borough Council held a short meeting Thursday with several brief updates.
Police Chief Vincent McGinnis said that phone scams are on the rise again, and the latest one tells callers they are from the Fraternal Order of Police requesting donations.
McGinnis emphasized that the FOP is not calling for donations, and no police would ask you to purchase large numbers of gift cards, and any caller asking you to do so, regardless of who they say they represent, is probably a scammer.
The chief also reminds travelers through the borough to slow down and be careful due to the construction.
Code Enforcement Officer Larry Mack said the Sheetz construction project is on schedule and they met with the state Department of Transportation regarding traffic signs and PennDOT has come up with some changes that will help with enforcement.
Mack also said that Continental Carbonic is working to get concrete laid and walls up so that they can continue to work on their expansion through the winter.
Also, he said that when they were drilling for core samples, they found logs from the old tannery about 11 feet down that were still in perfect shape.
Borough Operations Manager Leslie Stott reported the borough received a letter from an eighth-grade student who lives on Turnpike Avenue.
She said the letter was very well written and requested the borough look into placing “Children at Play” signs on the street. There had been signs at one time, but they were removed when they became old and faded.
Stott noted that other residents have requested the signs, but the borough has been reluctant to erect them.
In the past, council has expressed concern that children would have a false sense of security and not be as careful playing near streets.
She asked council to review the request and the history of signs in the past, and the matter will be discussed at a later date.
