CLEARFIELD – Property cleanup was a topic of discussion at the Lawrence Township meeting Tuesday night.
But first, the supervisors set Trick-or-Treat for Oct. 31 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Halloween is on a Saturday this year, and the scheduled time coincides with Clearfield’s.
Supervisor Jeremy Ruffner began the discussion about property cleanup by saying that the township is starting to crack down on properties with junk/rubbish.
He said too many homeowners are allowing clutter, junk, etc. to collect and it needs taken care of.
“People have to live near you,” he said, adding that the problem makes properties look unsightly and, in some cases, can attract animals.
Violators will be cited without warning, and will continue to be cited until the property is cleaned.
Another issue with property cleanup has been the compost site for the township.
“I’m just going to say this for everyone,” Roadmaster Ron Woodling said. “There is a four-foot by eight-foot sign at the site. Please read it.”
The sign informs people of what they can and cannot leave at the compost site, including grass, leaves and brush, but not treated wood, lumber, construction materials, etc.
Township employees and officials have been randomly stopping at the site and cameras are in place to monitor, and violators will be cited.
Ruffner said he stopped a man who dumped off boards with nails in them and after talking with the man, helped him re-load the wood.
The compost site was created with help from a federal grant, and includes a chipper machine. Because of debris left at the site, the township has had to put about $13,000 of repairs into the machine.
The township released the leaf pickup schedule, beginning Oct. 19 through Nov. 20.
On Mondays, the township will pick up only bagged leaves, and all bags must be biodegradable.
Zone one, including Golden Rod, Weaverhurst, Hillsdale and Haney Development will be picked up Tuesdays; zone two, including Hyde, Country Club Hills, Long Meadow, Elizabeth Street and Cambria Drive will be picked up Wednesdays; zone three, including Plymptonville, Susquehanna Terrace and Kerr Addition will be picked up Thursdays.
Fridays will be for open pick up in areas that may have been missed in November.
Woodling said the new vacuum truck only has a range of 10 feet, so leaves must be raked to the curb and not around mailboxes or poles. And no debris other than leaves will be picked up.
For those wanting to collect and drop off their own yard waste, leaves can be taken to the Clearfield Borough site on 21st Street, and brush to the township site on Mann Road.
