Hawk Run Couple Facing Drug Charges

CLEARFIELD – A Hawk Run couple is facing felony and misdemeanor drug charges after allegedly being found in possession of marijuana and fentanyl at a local hotel.

Daniel Justin Teats, 25, and Cayla Mackenzie Peffer, 20, both of Hawk Run, are being charged in the case by Lawrence Township police.

Both Teats and Peffer are being charged with two counts of felony manufacture, delivery or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver as well as seven misdemeanors.

Garret Christopher Hewitt, 23, of Tyrone is also being charged with one count each of misdemeanor DUI/controlled substance and disorderly conduct as well as two summaries.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, police responded to the Red Roof Inn, Clearfield, at 7:30 p.m. March 29 after Hewitt was arrested for driving under the influence.

Staff met Officer Levi Olson and said they were directed to call police due to issues with guests in room 110. It was also found Hewitt came back to the hotel and was in the room.

They said two couples had rented the room, and Hewitt was not a hotel guest. Multiple people were seen coming and going, and there had been complaints about the odor of marijuana.

When police went to the room with staff, contact was made with Teats and Peffer and there was an immediate odor of burnt marijuana.

Peffer was advised why police were present, and that they would have to leave the room. She was also told police could detect the odor of marijuana, and to bring it out of the room.

She reportedly turned over an unlabeled pill bottle containing two baggies of a green, leafy vegetable matter that had the odor of marijuana.

Police asked if they had any other drugs inside their hotel room, Teats said no and the couple gave officers permission to search the room.

A search subsequently yielded a scraping tool with residue on the nightstand between the beds, according to the affidavit of probable cause.

In its drawer was a pen tube with burnt residue wrapped in aluminum foil; a notepad with a page of weights for “bags,” “buns” and “bricks” and box with a U.S. Currency print on the lid.

The box reportedly contained a large bag of marijuana and a green bag of a brown, powdery substance, which was later determined to be fentanyl.

On the coat rack, police found a sack with three “yin yang” printed bags, an ash tray with residue, a container with residue, a bundle of Viking skull print wax paper wraps and a scale with residue.

When Peffer was asked who the sack belonged to, she initially said it was her sister’s, then hers. Ultimately, she said she didn’t know who it belonged to.

Inside, police found birth certificates and social security cards belonging to her son and his deceased father. Peffer said those items were hers, but she wasn’t sure why they were in the sack.

Peffer then gave permission for a secondary search to be done on her purse. Beforehand, she reportedly removed a glass bong with residue and grinder with vegetable matter on it.

When she turned her purse over to police, they found a butane torch lighter. All seized items were taken to the township’s police station, photographed and logged as evidence.

The bags of green, leafy vegetable matter weighed 21.7 grams, and were prepared for further analysis along with the brown powdery substance.

Teats waived his right to a preliminary hearing on Wednesday; his bail is currently set at $10,000 unsecured.  Peffer and Hewitt are scheduled for hearings Aug. 12 and Sept. 9, respectively.
