CLEARFIELD – While coronavirus concerns have cancelled many summer events, plans are under way to open the 2020 Corner Concert Series in downtown Clearfield.
The first corner concert will take place June 5, and the series will continue every Friday night throughout summer. This year, the concerts will raise funds for the Bob E. Day Memorial Scholarship.
In honor of the popular, local radio DJ, the late Bob E. Day, the scholarship is awarded to Clearfield Area Junior-Senior High School students who have a strong commitment to community service.
Special consideration is given to students pursuing careers in broadcasting/communications. Donations can be made via PayPal at clearfieldcharitablefoundation.org under scholarships.
People can also mail donations to the Bob E. Day Memorial Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 1442, Clearfield, PA 16830.
Opening night will feature a local cover band, Hell Bent, that plays hard rock and heavy metal classics from the 70’s and 80’s, beginning at 7 p.m.
Because the band is expected to draw a large crowd, organizers have moved the concert from Shaw Park to Lower Witmer Park to permit social distancing.
Attendees are strongly encouraged to bring their own lawn chair or blanket, while outdoor seating isn’t available at the new venue.
Sponsorship opportunities are also being made available to ensure performers are fairly compensated while funds are also raised for the scholarship fund.
Organizers invite local businesses and or individuals to help cover costs, bearing in mind the slate of performers haven’t had paid shows for several months.
“They need our support, too,” said Steve Albert, organizer. “We understand people may not have as much to give … but together, we could make this the most successful season yet.”
Single-night and seasonal sponsorships are $100 and $1,000, respectively. Sponsors would be included in any promotion of the Corner Concert Series.
Albert said the concerts usually draw around 100 people – mostly locals – and over 840 people follow the social media page on Facebook.
Any interested sponsor is asked to contact Albert by phone at 814-762-5451; current sponsors include WOK!W 102.9 FM and BioGraphics.
Attendees are encouraged by Clearfield Borough, along with Corner Concert sponsors, performers and organizers to follow state and federal public safety guidelines.
If you or a loved are vulnerable to the coronavirus, please don’t feel obligated to attend. All attendees participate voluntarily and everyone is responsible for their own personal health/safety.
Follow the Corner Concert Series on Facebook for the most up-to-date information. Concerts will be rescheduled in the event of rain.
