HYDE – Although the score, 70-58 in favor of DuBois, looks like the Beavers had an easy time defeating the Clearfield Bison Monday night, at Clearfield, the fact of the matter it was a dog fight from start to finish.
And yes, DuBois basically led from start to finish, but in between it was a battle of two strong willed boys basketball squads.
As Clearfield head coach Nate Glunt put it after the game, saying, “I am very proud of our guys for the way they responded all night long, especially in the fourth quarter, cutting the DuBois lead down to six points.”
DuBois opened the scoring on a bucket by 6’ 8” senior Chase Husted and then having Cade Walker of Clearfield shortly tie it at two each. Then Husted would connect again moments later that gave the Beavers the lead for good.
The Beavers would go on to outscore Clearfield after eight minutes 20-12 and then add another four points to its margin before the half, 32-20, by winning the second quarter 12-8.
The Beavers’ Lennon Lindholm had 13 first half points, that included the junior draining three from beyond the arc.
Clearfield’s Walker dumped in 10 first half points to keep the Bison within striking distance.
The Beavers, with 4:46 to play in the second quarter opened up a 15 point margin, 29-14, only to see Clearfield battle back with a 6-0 run that helped cut the Beavers edge to 32-20 going into the break.
Clearfield, down 35-22 early in the third quarter, got three point plays from both Walker and Karson Rumsky to nip away at the DuBois lead, 37-28 with 6:07 to go in the third frame.
Rumsky was a big part of the Bison third quarter offense scoring 11 of his team high 17 points on the evening.
DuBois, however, kept finding answers as seven of its players put points on the scoreboard in the third to still take a double digit lead, 56-46, heading into the final eight minutes.
Bison Andrew Lopez brought Clearfield to within just six tallies of the Beavers at 57-51 with two baskets with five minutes to go.
Leading now 59-51, the Beavers then won the game at the free throw line connecting on 7 of 8 in approximately a 52 second span to bolt out to 66-51 margin that Clearfield would shrink some, but not enough on this night as DuBois improved to 12-2 on the season.
Walker with 16 and Luke Winters with 13 helped Rumsky in the Bison offensive attack.
Lennon Lindholm paced the Beavers with game high 25 points followed by 13 from Husted and 10 added by Nick Felix.
Both squads did well from the charity stripe with Dubois going 17 of 25 and Clearfield hitting 11 of 14.
Glunt added, “If we can play like this tomorrow night against a very good Huntingdon team then we have a good chance.”
The junior varsity game was won by the Bison, knocking off the Beavers by a score of 48-40. Morgen Billotte and Curvey Purkett each had 13 points for Clearfield. .
Clearfield (8-5) is home again on Tuesday night in a big Mountain League game against Huntingdon with JV action tipping off at 6 pm and the varsity game to immediately follow.
