CURWENSVILLE — In the hopes of trying to erase the sour taste of Monday’s 1-point loss against West Branch, the Curwensville Lady Tide welcomed some home cooking on Wednesday evening inside Patton Hall as they hosted the Glendale Lady Vikings.
That home cooking unfortunately was not tasty, as the Lady Vikings took an early lead and overwhelmed the home squad, dropping Curwensville with a 58-17 loss.
Curwensville had trouble off the get-go as they fell behind early, 6-0 just 2:29 into the opening quarter, and quickly found themselves in a deeper hole as the quarter went on. Turnovers began plaguing the home squad with bad passes, tipped balls, and trouble handling the basketball in transition. In the opening quarter, the Tide committed eight turnovers, leading to quick baskets from Glendale, who found themselves ahead 18-4 after one quarter of play.
The Tide’s troubles continued in the second quarter, as turnovers again plagued the entire squad. At the same time, when they had opportunities at the basket, whether in the paint or on the perimeter, the ball was not making the net. For the game, Curwensville shot under 20 percent from the floor, finishing 6-for-34.
Glendale took advantage in the second stanza to put 23 points on the board, with Olivia Reese leading the way with eight points in the quarter. The Lady Vikings had three scorers in double digits as Reese finished with 13, Kyla Campbell with 15, and Madison Lukehart posted a game-high 16 points. Reese also led with four steals, while Hanna Noel finished with seven rebounds.
As the third quarter began, Glendale had possession with a 41-7 advantage, and only six more points were going to set the running clock into effect.
A pair of jumpers from Noel and a layup from Campbell set that clock in motion just a couple minutes into the quarter, but by that point it was clear the Lady Vikings had the game in hand. By the time the final quarter began, many of the reserves on both sides got in valuable minutes and experience.
Curwensville was led by Tarah Jacobson with six points, while Alyssa Bakaysa led on the boards with eight.
The Lady Vikings won the opening junior varsity contest as well, 45-4.
Curwensville (2-7) will try to end what is now a six-game losing streak on Friday night when they travel to face the Lady Owls of Harmony. Junior varsity tips off at 6 p.m. while the varsity game will follow at approximately 7:30 p.m.
