CURWENSVILLE – For Curwensville Area High School girls basketball coach Bob Desmett, improvement will once again be the top priority for the Lady Tide during the upcoming 2019-20 season.
After having a 2018-19 record of 5-17 in his second year with the Lady Tide, Desmett will need to replace last year’s senior and leading scorer Madison Weber. Along with Weber, Curwensville also said farewell to seniors Kaitlyn McCracken and Brittney Wagner.
Now the Lady Tide must count upon five returning letter winners in seniors Hannah Condon, Tarah Jacobson and Briana Swindell along with two sophomores, Alyssa Bakaysa and Kyra Henry.
Desmett will start, at this time, the three senior letter winners (Condon, Jacobson and Swindell) along with fellow senior Jordan Witherite. Sophomore Bakaysa will complete the starting unit.
Others in the rotation early on for the Lady Tide will be Henry and sophomores Austyn Guiher and Desaray Cossar.
It should be noted that the Lady Tide currently have no juniors on the roster.
Coach Desmett spoke about a key to success, saying, “We want the sophomores to step up and be solid contributors to the team. They need to gain valuable experience, not only for this season, but the two years following as we have no juniors on our team at this moment.”
Speaking about other keys to a successful year Desmett commented, “Our team is looking to be dangerous from all angles. For us it is key to continue underclassmen development. Again, with no juniors on our squad, we will depend on our seniors and key underclassmen to push the ball in transition. While we expect a solid start, our goal is to be an even better team in the second half of the season.”
The Lady Tide open the 2019-20 season with Moshannon Valley league foe West Branch at home, on Monday, December 9, with a 7:30 pm tip-off. Last year the Lady Warriors defeated Curwensville 63-23 and 55-39.
