MEN’S SWIMMING
GROVE CITY — Sophomore Chase Bietz (Clearfield) won the 100-yard breaststroke and was on the winning 400 freestyle relay team for Penn State Behrend at the Grove City Fall Classic Saturday.
The 2018-19 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Newcomer of the Year touched in 59.29 seconds for first place in the individual race and had a 48.03 anchor that stopped the clock at 3:15.16 in the relay.
Bietz picked up second-place points in the 200 individual medley with a 1:59.15 trip and placed fifth in the 100 free in 49.08 and the 200 free in 1:48.60. The latter two were his first races at those distances for the Lions.
He turned in a 26.60 breaststroke leg for the 200 medley quartet that wound up fourth with a 1:40.36 time.
The Lions placed fourth in the five-team meet with 539 points.
Last season, Bietz won 17 individual races, including the 100 and 200 breaststroke and 200 IM at the AMCC Championships, and was on 18 winning foursomes, including the 200, 400 and 800 free and 400 medley teams that claimed AMCC titles.

GROVE CITY — Junior Hayden Steiner (Clearfield) was one of the busiest swimmers at the Grove City Fall Classic Saturday, competing in eight events and earning points in five of them to help Clarion finished second with a 767 total.
Steiner was 10th in the 200-yard butterfly in 2:15.11, 12th in the 200 individual medley in 2:12.88 and 16th in the 100 fly in 58.45 in addition to posting a 25.12 fly split for the Golden Eagle ‘C’ 200 medley foursome and a 52.65 second leg for the ‘B’ free quartet. Both relay teams placed fifth with times of 1:44.30 and 3:29.62, respectively.
Steiner also finished 24th in the 200 freestyle in 1:57.76, 26th in the 50 free in 24.17 and 28th in the 100 free in 53.06.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
ERIE — Sophomore goalkeeper Madi Jones (Clearfield) added two more wins to her season total last week behind Penn State Behrend’s stout defense against Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference foes.
She and back-up Morgan Harding, who played the final 11:15 in net, did not have to face a shot in a 3-0 victory over Medaille at Buffalo, N.Y., Wednesday and had to make only one save in a 2-0 shutout of visiting Penn State Altoona Saturday.
Jones and the Lions are riding a four-game winning streak for a 4-0-1 record that is second to Pitt-Greensburg’s 5-0 start in the AMCC and has gotten the team back to .500 at 5-5-2.
Jones, who is 5-1-2, has a 1.18 goals-against average for 762 minutes and 24 seconds between the pipes that is fourth-best among AMCC goalies.
She has stopped 21 of 31 shots on goal in her eight starts.

CLARION — Freshman forward/midfielder Alayna Ryan (Clearfield) provided the insurance goal for Indiana University of Pennsylvania in a 2-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division win over Clarion last Wednesday.
Her shot from 18 yards out found the upper corner in the 74th minute and gave Mya Hilliard an assist.
Ryan just missed another goal less than a minute later when she got past the Clarion defense only to see her shot go inches wide of the post.
She made her seventh start and was credited with one shot Saturday when the Crimson Hawks traveled to California and triumphed 3-1 to raise their record to 6-4, including a 5-4 log in the PSAC-West.
Ryan is second on the team with seven points on two goals and three assists. Six of her 11 shots have been on goal.

CO-ED GOLF
UNIVERSITY PARK — Senior Brandon Orsich (Clearfield) capped his three-year career for Penn State DuBois by posting an 80 at the Penn State Blue Course in the 2019 Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference/United States Collegiate Athletic Association Championships Tuesday after the tourney’s first round was rained out Monday.
His score tied for 14th among 51 PSUAC golfers and tied for 40th among 118 USCAA players.
Josh Tosh was medalist for the Lions with a 77, one stroke better than Colin Moore. Jeremy Krise added a 98.
With a 333 aggregate score, Penn State DuBois placed sixth in the nine-team PSUAC competition and 15th in the 20-team USCAA tourney.

FOOTBALL
NEW WILMINGTON — Freshman cornerback Noah VonGunden (Curwensville) registered his first two tackles, both on the kickoff unit, in his second appearance for Grove City Saturday as the Wolverines spoiled Westminster’s Homecoming Game, 43-41, with a touchdown as time ran out in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference clash.
A crowd of 2,670 fans at Harold Burry Stadium saw the Wolverines stun the Titans after a fumble recovery at the one with four seconds remaining. That play came four seconds after Grove City seemingly had seen their chance for victory dashed by an interception.
The Wolverines are 3-2 in the PAC and 4-2 overall.

MILLERSVILLE — Senior linebacker Christian Rumery (Clearfield) played in his sixth game for Lock Haven in a 48-23 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division loss to Millersville in front of 1,350 fans at Biemesderfer Stadium Saturday.
The Bald Eagles’ third PSAC-East defeat dropped their record to 1-5.
Rumery has been involved in six tackles, including two solo stops.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
BLOOMSBURG — Freshman Jeremiah Vezza (Clearfield) was the sixth Gannon runner to cross the finish line at the Bloomsburg Invitational Saturday.
His time of 29:19.3 was 42nd among the 51 starters from six schools.
The Golden Knights finished third with 78 points.
