DUBOIS – For over 40 years, DuBois Central Catholic Middle and High School has designated a Spirit Week with proceeds going to the DuBois Area United Way.

An entire week of spirited activity culminates in United Way Day on Friday, Sept. 20.  Senior High Student Council is under the leadership of Johnathan Ritsick and Lindsey Reiter, who are the facilitators of the activities.

According to Ritsick, “This whole week is very special not only to us because it is fun with all of the themes, but [also] because it is a concentrated way of giving back to the community we live in.

“Individually, we do community service hours, but United Way is a special charity that our school does as a whole every year.  All donations, given to United Way, change lives right here in our own community.”

Monday, the students kicked off the day wearing their favorite team apparel from Cardinal team wear to professional sports.  Tuesday was “Too Tired Tuesday” and students could wear appropriate sleep or loungewear.

Thursday is “Tropical Thursday” and students will be able to wear their best island wear. Friday is United Way Day, which is also the day when students present their class skits to their fellow classmates.

This year’s theme is “Decades” and each grade’s skit will focus on an assigned decade.  Students in the sixth grade will concentrate on the 1960’s, seventh grade the 70’s, until ending with the senior class doing its skit for the year 2020.

All aspects of the skits are done by the students, from the initial idea, to writing copy, set design and costuming.  The final approval to present the skit is given by Kate Kunkle, faculty advisor.

Kunkle stated, “Every student is asked to make a monetary donation of $2 for the United Way.  We want the kids (students) to know that there are people in our area who need help.

“We want to remind them that our faith challenges us to help meet the needs of others – with direct service or with contributions to agencies that offer services.”

Skits will be presented in the morning and afterwards everyone will have lunch on the soccer field at DCC.  Two rounds of games, indoor and outdoor, will be followed by the annual Junior/Senior Powderpuff Football Game.
