SMETHPORT – As has been the case for the Curwensville Area High School football team two of the first three weeks of the 2019 season, week four was pretty much the same as the Golden Tide offense once again couldn’t get untracked in its 26-0 loss to Smethport on the Hubbers’ home field Friday night.
And, as in the Tide’s two other losses, this was another shutout for the opponent.
The Hubbers (3-0) scored the only points it would need at the 3:56 mark of the opening quarter on a three yard run by junior running back Braedon Johnson. The extra point attempt was wide to the left. Johnson went on to rush for 137 yards on 15 carries for the game.
Late in the first 12 minutes the Tide punted deep into Hubber territory only to have Johnson field the kick and return it 90 yards to pay dirt with five seconds left to play before the second quarter. Smethport again failed on the two point conversion attempt, but after one period the Hubbers held a 12-0 edge.
Neither team would score in the second and third quarters as the Tide offense still couldn’t find the end zone but the defense kept Curwensville still hanging around.
With 10:05 remaining in the contest Smethport crushed any hope of a Golden Tide comeback as quarterback Noah Lentz went up the middle on a 47 yard touchdown run and then connected with Johnson on the two point conversion making it 20-0 in favor of the Hubbers.
Lentz also eclipsed the century mark on the ground for the Hubbers, rushing for 138 yards on 17 carries. He was six of 11 through the air for 81 yards as well.
Johnson, who ended the night scoring three times, had the final touchdown with 5:07 to play on a four yard scamper with the extra point attempt failing. The final was a convincing 26-0 win on Homecoming Night for the Hubbers.
Curwensville (1-3) returns home to Coach Andy Evanko Stadium on Friday when it hosts Keystone with a 7 pm kick-off. Last season, in the first ever meeting between the two schools, the Tide prevailed over the Panthers 30-14 at Keystone.
Keystone (3-1) won its third straight contest on Friday night, taking care of Cameron County 49-12.
You can listen to the Golden Tide-Panther game on WOKW-FM, 102.9, starting with the pre-game show at 6:45 pm.
