CLEARFIELD – The Lawrence Township Supervisors heard an update on the Crown Crest Cemetery, and also discussed several other items during Tuesday’s meeting.
Solicitor James Naddeo reported that a hearing regarding the cemetery will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.
He and Supervisor Randy Powell will attend as will Edward Grenier, who is currently listed as owner but is also incarcerated.
Naddeo said he expects that Powell will testify on the current state of the cemetery and its abandonment. The court then should declare the cemetery officially abandoned and then appoint a receiver, who will then be in charge of operating the cemetery.
The board also learned about a potential project on Pifer Road. Roadmaster Ron Woodling said that the Clearfield County Conservation District recently determined that the pipe under the road guiding Lick Run is too small.
Woodling said the plan is to eventually remove the pipe and install a half-moon bridge, which would allow for better water flow and also take out some of the sharpness of the curve.
Woodling said CCCD has been in contact with the Fish and Boat Commission and they would like to help with the project by helping to apply for grants. Without grant money, the project won’t be feasible.
Finally, Supervisor Jeremy Ruffner said he has been thinking about the recent tragedy in Erie where children died in a house fire. The house was also a daycare where the children were staying overnight.
Ruffner proposed the township look into creating an ordinance where daycare centers in the township would be required to have their smoke detectors inspected yearly, possibly by the representatives of the three fire departments. He said it would need to be something that was easy for the daycare owners to work with.
The state already does annual inspections, but often the fire alarms are not tested.
Ruffner said he would like to hear back from daycare owners as well as others on the idea before the township puts anything into effect.
