CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield Choral Society will present Requiem for the Living by Dan Forrest on Sunday, May 19 at 3:30 p.m. at Clearfield Presbyterian Church, located at 119 N. Second St., in downtown Clearfield.
This 40-minute, five-movement piece is the composer’s best-known work, with music that expresses the grief humanity feels when a loved one passes. Beautiful harmonies, met with liturgical texts, convey these emotions through choir and professional orchestra.
Paired with this work will also be Jubilate Deo by Dan Forrest and an acapella setting of Psalm 131 by Jeffery Van.
After the success of last year’s performance of Handel’s Messiah, the choir decided to undertake another major work. This time, it was the Requiem, a modern piece, having been written in 2012.
The professional orchestra, made up of musicians from across Pennsylvania and beyond, features many of the same musicians that traveled to Clearfield last year. They are excited to be returning to our small town, because they quickly fell in love with it during their last visit.
This concert is under the direction of Jacob Mandell, with Catherine Mandell serving as assistant director. Mason Strouse is the choir’s manger, and Gary Wilsoncroft is the accompanist.
Tickets can be purchased online at www.ClearfieldArts.org, at the CAST office (112 E. Locust St., in downtown Clearfield) on Mondays from 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m., and at the church one hour before the concert. Seating is limited, so advance ticket purchase is recommended.
Clearfield Choral Society wishes to thank the businesses, organizations and individuals who are supportive of this choral program throughout the year.
The Choral Society was reorganized in 2015, with just 12 people singing simple hymns and arrangements at their first concert.
In four short years, the choir has tripled in size, and is now able to contract a professional orchestra for their spring concert, a tradition they hope to continue.
Membership in the Clearfield Choral Society is open to anyone age 16 and older. There is a small registration fee to pay each season.
The Choral Society generally performs a major concert in the spring and a winter concert. There are occasionally other performances scheduled throughout the year.
