BELLEFONTE — Freshmen batterymates Emma Hipps and Olivia Bender teamed up to propel the Clearfield Area High School softball team past Bellefonte 7-1 in a Mountain League make-up game Monday afternoon.
Hipps pitched a four-hitter with 11 strikeouts and just one walk while Bender drove in five runs with three hits as the Lady Bison improved to 8-7 and evened their league record at 6-6.
The Lady Bison got to Lady Raider ace Lexi Rogers for three runs in the first inning.
A walk to Karly Rumsky and a single by Hipps gave Bender her first RBI opportunity, and she responded with a double for two runs, scoring moments later on Lauren Ressler’s groundout.
Bellefonte (7-8, 5-7 ML) posted its run in the lower half of the frame when Mallorie Smith’s single was misplayed, Lily Gardner moved her up with a sacrifice bunt and Hanna Lauck grounded out for the RBI.
Clearfield erased all doubts about the outcome with another three-run salvo in the fourth inning, with a two-out error on Rumsky’s grounder costly for the Lady Raiders.
Hipps singled to drive in Casey English, who had walked, and Bender followed with a single for two more RBIs.
Rumsky singled and scored on a Bender single in the sixth.
Hipps’ two-hit game was her 10th.
Morgan Cheek also had a pair of singles for the Lady Bison, who go back on the road Tuesday to play Central at Martinsburg.
